DALLAS – Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday that Dez Bryant should have known better than to pull his helmet off to argue with the officials in Sunday’s win over Minnesota.
Bryant confronted the officials after being called for offensive pass interference in the third quarter. When he removed his helmet, he got flagged for a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, pushing the Cowboys out of field-goal range.
Bryant told reporters after the game he didn’t known the rule, which was put in place in 1997 in response to Emmitt Smith routinely taking his helmet off after touchdowns.
“The Emmitt Smith rule is what that’s called when you take your helmet off to run off the field or take your helmet off when the play is over,” the Cowboys owner said on his weekly radio show on KRLD-FM, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “That’s (the) Emmitt Smith rule. The Dallas Cowboy players should know that one better than any team in the league. When players don’t know rules, that’s a joint fault of coaching as well as the player.”
