SAN ANTONIO – There was no joy in Valley Ranch after the Dallas Cowboys decided to cut franchise sacks leader DeMarcus Ware.
The Cowboys let Ware go Tuesday after he nixed their demand to take a cut in pay. He was set to earn $12.25 million in base salary in 2014.
“A decision like this, involving a man who is a cornerstone player in the history of your franchise, is extremely difficult,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a statement released by the club.
“After meeting this afternoon, DeMarcus and I agreed on an understanding that would allow him to explore the options he will have for the 2014 season and beyond. We were also in a very strong agreement that playing for the Dallas Cowboys would be one of the options we would both be exploring.
“DeMarcus Ware, through his performance on the field and his outstanding character, is someone who is held in the highest regard within the Dallas Cowboys family. He is worthy of our greatest respect, and we want what is best for him and his family.”
Ware leaves Dallas with 117 sacks. A first-round pick in 2005, he appeared in seven Pro Bowls during his nine seasons with Dallas.
Ware amassed seven straight seasons with 10 or more sacks from 2006 through 20012.
The Cowboys saved $7.4 million in cap space by cutting Ware.
