Preseason: Cowboys 24, Dolphins 20
CANTON, Ohio – Owner Jerry Jones said after watching Ron Leary play every offensive snap of the Cowboys’ 24-20 preseason-opening win over the Dolphins that he would be comfortable with the second-year player starting the regular season at left guard.
Leary joined the first team after Nate Livings underwent knee surgery last week. Livings, who started all 16 games last season at left guard, could be out for a month.
Dallas opens the regular season on Sept. 8 at home against the New York Giants.
“I don’t want to be the coach, but I’m comfortable (with Leary as an starter),” Jones said Sunday. “He just adds a substance. It’s not just his (6-foot-3, 331-pound) size, it’s his punch. So he adds a base in the middle, and when you put that (rookie center Travis) Frederick in there, it changes things up for us from what we’ve had.”
Frederick joined tackles Tyron Smith and Doug Free as the only offensive starters on the field for the Cowboys in the Hall of Fame game.
“I thought I was OK,” said Frederick, a surprise first-round pick for Dallas. “I definitely have a lot to work on from here on out.”
With Leary leading the way, the Cowboys rushed for 170 yards, well over last season’s near the bottom of the league average of 79.1 yards.
“I think it’s a combination of a lot of things,” Jones said of the improved running game. “We are doing play-action and I like our (multiple) tight end formations. We’ve got those tight ends in there. We are probably giving our blockers a better chance than some of the things we were doing last year, not that some of that wasn’t good…I saw those tight end sets do some good things.”
Injury report: Jones said the leg injuries suffered by second-year safety Matt Johnson and second-year defensive end Ben Bass aren’t series.
“We didn’t see anything on (Johnson’s) X-rays that bothered us,” Jones said. “I thought he was playing well before he went out.”
Johnson left the game in the second quarter and did not return.
