IRVING – Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is confident quarterback Tony Romo will recover fully from the back surgery he underwent Friday morning and be back on the field in time for organized team activities in the spring.
“One of the pluses for having had it done as early as this morning is that it would really contribute to him being able to get right there when it comes time for the team to be in OTAs and do the preparation, the beginning of the preparation for next year…So we would anticipate him being right on time there and expect it,” Jones told Dallas’ KRLD-FM.
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett, however, said there is no timetable for Romo’s recovery.
Romo will be 34 next April. Since signing a six-year, $108 million contract that included $55 million guarantee, he has undergone back surgery twice.
Romo has a cyst removed in April. On Friday morning, he underwent surgery to repair a herniated disk the Cowboys said he suffered in last week’s 24-23 win at Washington.
Team doctor Drew Dossett performed both operations.
“We feel like he’s as good a guy at this as there is on the planet,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said at a news conference. “We felt like the surgery went well and Tony should be able to come home hopefully later today and start to begin his rehabilitation for the 2014 season.”
Both Jones and Garrett said the two surgeries are unrelated.
“As you can imagine, I probably have a better knowledge or familiarity with Tony’s earlier surgery this spring and this one than I ever have on my own body,” Jones said. “And so from everything I know from talking to several people personally, there’s no relation between these and wouldn’t look to be a chronic-type, of the chronic nature. Now, again, I’m going to be very limited as to what we can go into medically. I know when we say back surgery that absolutely covers the world. All you and I have to do or anybody is have back issues and there are so many that have them and so many that have them treated that there, without exaggeration, there are all kinds of solutions – surgically and non-surgically – and those were considered by the way in this situation.”
