SAN ANTONIO – Jerry Jones continues to strike an optimistic tone when talking about Tony Romo’s future, despite the quarterback having undergone two back surgeries in an eight-month span in 2013.
Jones, in fact, is so optimistic Romo will recover fully from the quarterback’s late December surgery to repair a herniated disk that he’s essentially ruling out drafting a passer in the early rounds in May.
“You don’t anticipate drafting a quarterback high with where we are with Romo, especially one that can play immediately,” the Cowboys’ web site quoted Jones as saying Monday at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.
“Several of these guys in today’s NFL are pretty quick. (Russell) Wilson and (Colin) Kaepernick and those guys that are move around types. Some of the ones that take a little more seasoning are more your traditional quarterbacks.”
Romo missed the season finale in which the Cowboys lost to the Eagles in a playoffs-or-go-home game. Jones said he talks to Romo “frequently” and that “he’s feeling much better.”
“Frankly, how he’s responding is very good,” Jones told reporters.
Romo likely will need three to four months to recover, but Jones is optimistic that he will be ready for training camp in July. Romo, who will be 34 next season, missed the offseason last year after surgery in the spring to remove a cyst from his back.
