IRVING – Demarcus Lawrence welcomes the daunting task of replacing the Dallas Cowboys’ career sacks leader.

“I know it’s big shoes to fill,” he said of following DeMarcus Ware, “but I’m going to work my butt off and give it my all.”

Determined to bolster their horrific, pass-rush weak defense, the Cowboys selected the Boise State defensive end with the 34th overall pick Friday night.

Dallas moved up to grab Lawrence by trading their second- and third picks (Nos. 47 and 78) to Washington.

“In the area of putting pressure on the passer,” owner Jerry Jones said, “he certainly was a first-round player for us.”

Dallas sported one of the worst defenses in NFL history last season. During the offseason, they cut Ware in a salary cap move and watched 2013 sacks leader Jason Hatcher join Washington in free agency.

“I love trying to mirror his game, steal some of his pass rush moves,” Lawrence said of Ware, who signed with Denver.

So would Lawrence like to don Ware’s No. 94 jersey?

“No, I’m my own Demarcus,” he said. “I don’t like trying to be nobody else. I’m going to be me, and I’m going to do it well.”
