ARLINGTON – Kyle Orton stated the obvious when asked about the interception he threw in the final minutes that sealed the Cowboys’ fate in Sunday night’s 24-22 do-or-die loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
“I wish I had the throw back,” he said.
With 1:49 left, the Cowboys had the ball at their own 32-yard line down by the final score. On a night when they amassed 417 yards, they were perfectly positioned to drive into field goal range for a Dan Bailey game-winning kick that would have put them in the playoffs for the first time since 2009.
But on first down, Orton threw behind Miles Austin, allowing Brandon Boykin to make the game-sealing interception.
“Miles ran a good route, and I just have to make that throw,” Orton said.
He’s right, but it’s hard to blame him after he threw for 358 yards and two touchdowns and two interceptions on 30-of-46 accuracy.
“Obviously there were a couple of plays in that game that he would love to have back, but I think if you look at the whole body of work, I think he did a heck of ajob,” coach Jason Garrett said. “He had a great week of practice. He was prepared. He was confident. I thought the guys responded to him. He made a ton of big plays in this game over and over and over again. He gave us a hell of a chance to win.”
