IRVING – Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was placed on season-ending injured reserved after undergoing back surgery Friday morning, coach Jason Garrett announced.
“He’s devastated,” Garrett said at a news conference. “He puts a lot into this.”
Garrett also announced that Kyle Orton will start in Sunday night’s de facto NFC East championship game against Philadelphia. The loser is out of the playoffs.
The decision to operate on Romo’s back was made late Thursday. Romo suffered what was believed to be a herniated disk in last week’s 24-23 win over Washington.
“We had been hoping he would respond to the treatment and would get comfortable enough to where doctors could clear him to play,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told Dallas’ KRLD-FM. “It was clear yesterday that he was not responding. They said the quicker the symptoms would clear, the better it would be for his recovery.
“He’s extremely disappointed…We know where his heart is. It was a super-human effort for him to continue playing against Washington and get us here.”
The Cowboys anticipate a full recovery for Romo, who has had his back operated on twice in the past nine months. In April, he underwent surgery to remove a cyst from his back, a procedure that forced him to sit out offseason workouts.
Jones also announced that linebacker Sean Lee will miss Sunday night’s game with a neck injury.
