Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman potentially faces one of the toughest decisions imaginable for an NFL player: compete in the Super Bowl or witness the birth of his first child.
Sherman’s girlfriend, Ashley Moss, is due any day now with their son. And that could potentially leave the Seahawks without the “greatest corner in the game” for Sunday’s Super Bowl XLIX matchup against the New England Patriots.
“He knows that he has an opportunity to face a big decision,” Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said Friday during a joint press conference in Phoenix with Pats coach Bill Belichick. “Whenever our players have a personal or family issue that comes up, it’s always about family first and they have to decide what’s best for them, and I support that.

“So however he goes with that — if he’s faced with that decision — we’ll support him and we’ll see how that goes. You know, we wish him luck, and I can’t wait to see Little Petey.”
With that, the crowd of media erupted in laughter — even the always-stoic Belichick.
Sherman, who would start Sunday in his second Super bowl in as many years, addressed the issue Thursday.
“I’m focused on the game right now. He’s not supposed to come on Sunday,” Sherman said of his soon-to-be-born son. “Obviously that would change some things. I think he’s going to be a disciplined young man and stay in there until after the game. He’s gonna do his father his first favor and stay in there for another week or two.
“I’ve thought about the possibility of him coming during the game and coming before the game, and we have things in place in case that happens and we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. I obviously did not know it was a topic of national debate, honestly. I’d not like to miss the birth of my first son, my first kid, but thankfully and hopefully and God willing, we won’t have to cross that bridge.”
