Tony Romo should consider hiring Roger Staubach as his publicist.
Speaking to reporters at the Cowboys’ practice on Thursday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, the Hall of Fame quarterback and Cowboys legend argued strongly that Romo shouldn’t be blamed for the team’s failure to reach the playoffs the last three seasons.
Staubach’s main argument: Romo can’t do it alone.
“Last year, if you looked at the Super Bowl, those guys (Baltimore and San Francisco) had running backs over 1,000 yards,” Staubach said. “(Romo) doesn’t complain. He doesn’t blame anybody, but he needs some up front at times. The running game has got to be better than (ranking 31st in the NFL in 2012), but Tony just does his job. He makes plays. He’s got a strong arm, and he just does a lot of good things out there [that] only a few quarterbacks in the league can do.
“It’s a team effort, too. I can’t take credit for those great teams that I had. It was because I had a running game, I had a good offensive line, I had a lot of good things working for me. But you’ve got to be good yourself. Tony is a franchise quarterback.”
I agree with Staubach completely. If you had to come up with a list of what’s wrong with Dallas, quarterback would be pretty low. The offensive line is weak, there hasn’t been a commitment to the running game and the defense hasn’t delivered takeaways to give the offense a short field. None of that is Romo’s fault.
