The Dallas Cowboys marveled at the masterful way San Diego’s Philip Rivers outmaneuvered them in rallying the San Diego Chargers to a 30-21 win.
“We were always a step too late,” cornerback Brandon Carr said. “They always checked into the right play to burn us.”
What happened at Qualcomm Stadium on Sunday doesn’t bode well for a defense that must now try to match wits with Peyton Manning.
In leading the Denver Broncos to a 4-0 start, the NFL’s ultimate chess master has passed for 16 touchdowns without any interceptions while posting a scintillating 138.0 passer rating.
“That’s not good,” defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin said when asked about facing Manning next weekend. “Last time I checked, the quarterback ratings came out (last week and) No. 1 was Manning. Guess who number two was? Rivers.”
Rivers completed 35-of-42 passes for 401 yards with three TDs and one interception. In starting 2-2, Dallas has allowed two passers to top 400 yards, with the New York Giants’ Eli Manning doing it first in the opener.
Looming on the schedule are several strong-armed passers, including Peyton Manning, Washington’s Robert Griffin III, Detroit’s Matthew Stafford, New Orleans’ Drew Brees, Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers and Chicago’s Jay Cutler.
“We’ve got a tough schedule,” linebacker Sean Lee said. “We’ve got to start winning week in and week out and you’ve got to play great quarterbacks and great teams every week. Until we lock it down and beat teams week in and week out, we’re going to be that 8-8 football team.”
Said defensive tackle Jason Hatcher, “We have to bounce back. We got hands down the best QB in the league coming in here. This guy (Manning) is a scientist out there. We have to shake this one off quick. If not, we’re going to get embarrassed.”
