ARLINGTON – The Cowboys defense has forced nine turnovers in the preseason after registering just 16 takeaways all last season, a fact Cowboys great Darren Woodson attributes to the scrapping of fired defensive coordinator Rob Ryan’s complex 3-4 alignment in favor of Monte Kiffin’s Cover 2 scheme.
Woodson, a five-time Pro Bowl safety for the Cowboys and the franchise’s career tackles leader, noted the defense has a thinner playbook under the 73-year-old Kiffin.
“They have dumbed it down a lot from where they were last year,” Woodson said Wednesday at the team’s kickoff luncheon. “The one thing you do see is that they are playing at a much faster pace. Bill Parcells used to always say, ‘If you know where you are going, you will play that much faster.’ That’s what I’m seeing from this group right now.”
While Woodson has questions about the defensive line and secondary, he thinks the Cowboys are in great shape linebacker-wise.
“The linebacking corps is unbelievable with Bruce Carter and Sean Lee,” said Woodson, now an analyst for ESPN.
