You take the best player at your draft position in the #1 round regardless of your need.

Yes, and there will several players of need standing on that plateau along with Vaccaro. Take the player (line) of greatest need.

If Cooper and Warmack are off the board I take Tavon Austin over any safety in the first round.

That's not really how BPA works. With BPA, you create a draft board that is affected by your team needs and you stick by that board, thereby preventing a team from reaching for a particular "need" in a particular round. For example, here is the Cowboys' draft board from 2011: http://sturminator.blogspot.com/2010/04/cowboys-final-draft-board.html

In other words, there's a good chance hat Trufant won't even be on our board.
That is actually exactly how it works.

I seriously doubt that Trufant would not be on our board anyways.

Or you trade down.
But traft boards and stictly numerical.

It's more like

R1, Tier 1 (4-5 players)
R1, Tier 2 (maybe 5-6 players)
R1, Tier 3 (maybe 5-6 players)
etc

You always have choices within Tiers, but it the gaps bewtween tiers where teams sometimes reach. Say Your Rd1/Tiers 1-3 players are all ok to take at pick 18 but when you get there only one is leaft and it's not a postion of need. You really need to trade down to get better value there. If a Tier 1 player is still on the board, you may end up taking them regardless of need. No trade down..nothing, just take them because the value (according to your board) is overwhelming.
Otherwise, the trick is use BPA but try to match value with need.

If BPA is QB at 18
It may be more valuable to trade that 18th pick and get two or three BPA picks later that also match need.
Same value but better use.

Excellent post JC. This is why I think on the Friday or early Saturday of the draft this board will be howling when we draft a wide receiver. It seems to me that there are a multitude of players at that position that are going to be graded higher than their round.

I value game film over 40 times. Sensabaugh ran a 4.4, Alan Ball a 4.5, AOA a 4.3...you guys get the point

Is anyone really questioning the guy's speed?

Granted he is a very good football player but Dallas need beef, not gravy.

Safety is, and has been a major need on this team for years. If the opportunity presents itself in the first round to sure FS up for the next 7-8 years nobody can be mad at them for doing so.

His leg was also cramping that day. I have concerns about Vaccaro, but his 40 isn't really one of them.

Any concerns that he played, last year, in one of the worst defensive teams in the history of the Universe of Texas?

Also, that Kenny talks way too much. At UT he was always being quoted after the game. he felt confident enough to pass weekly judgment on his team's poor defense, no matter that the secondary was a sieve.

He's a big joke, ah tell you. He will excel only in yaking, showing his tats and pointing fingers. Lucky he did not play in the SEC. He'd be a projected 4th rounder.

I would be shocked if we go OL or S in the first 2 rounds of this draft. I just don't see it. We will go DE and DT in the first 2 rounds, imo. The only way I see us going either OL or S is if the value of the pick is just to much to pass up.

Want to make a bet? We worked out several safety and OLine first/second round prospects, and we've haven't worked out any dlinemen.

i think we got to get a DT like Richardson or Hankins something we can build on on the DL

or Benny Logan

or some pass rusher

I don't think we even address our O line until the 3rd

a S in the 2nd

I'm worried they will take Vaccaro over warmack/cooper if there. Are you? Hardly any zone coverage on KV's tape.

Bryan Broaddus
I believe they would take one of those OG before the S.

If Warmack & Cooper are gone by 18 & Vaccaro & Fluker are available, who do you take?

I don't think we draft Vaccaro in the first. We will grab a safety in 2nd - 4th. Here is what I am thinking in the first 4 rounds:
DL
OL
S
RB

We need a beefy DT for the Tampa 2.
I am predicting that we will see 3 QBs go in the top 12. Which will end up causing some players to slip lower in the draft. If you see Star slip, I can absolutely see JJ move up in the draft again this year. Not to 6th, but if Star or another covetted player (Warmack) are the ones to slip, Jerry would go grab them in the 12th-16th range I bet. I have a feeling there will be a lot of movement in draft positions this year in the top 15. Count on it.

Ed Reed, arguably the best safety of all time, ran a 4.57 40.... He's also a great return man.

i care more about the draft as a whole than just the decision on the first pick. if we grab a 1st round safety and follow up with several other solid picks at other positions, i'd be perfectly fine.
Sean Lee wasn't a 1st round pick for us, neither was Bruce Carter and they're two of the best players on our defense. Murray wasn't a 1st round pick either.

Absolutely NOT.

It's not that I expect to find the next Darren Woodson in any draft, but if history is going to be any guide for me, there's no way I using a #1 pick on a safety who doesn't run 4.5 or better.

Woodson ran 4.35 at his combine. No way I use my top pick on a safety, no matter how he looks on film, who runs 4.55-4.65.

Go OL or DL or BPA with first pick and find a safety in another round.

That's just me.

First if I was looking for a Safety in our new 4-3, I'd want a Cliff Harris not a Woodson, or I'd want another Roy Williams. In Kiffins defense you had better find a big hitter.

Vacarro, if you watch the film he has good range, and is not afraid to hit. Harris was a world class sprinter in college.....so speed does kill. Roy was a world class hitter, won the Jim Thorpe award and the Bronco Nagurski award as a Junior. Really what has Vacarro done?

They are also some of the first on the often injured list?

Barry Church fits that description. more ofa in the box S. I'm thinking Dallas will be looking more of a FS, coverage type in the draft.
