Safety Need-can we find that next Brain Branch do it all type?

still 8 games to go so many things can change; hot teams can cool off and cold teams warm up
Sadly, as long as Everflop is DC I doubt we can get much better there no matter what. We are NOT as bad as we have been playing; we are NOT that untalented. Its coaching and not just him either.
Perfect world we hire a new DC in the offseason, while increasing our draft position in the process.

I don’t think that Downs slides. He is the best safety prospect in a long time. Some team is going to think he has Ed Reed-potential.
I just don’t think there is enough film for scouts to certain to put him in a single high.

He’s more of a Kyle Hamilton type player IMO

another reason speculation about who is going to be the top picks now is pretty useless
a lot of football left to be played; OSU is going to the playoffs and for at least one game and probably more so he will be seen playing in the really bright lights
so like many the evaluation of Downs could change significantly
THOUGH one could point out he is in his third year; one at Bama and two at OsU so that is a lot of film to look at
this guy is not a one year wonder

There's a nickel/S out of Miami that has some Branch vibes for sure. Keionte Scott just always is making a play. Very good coming down hill. Great instincts on screens, outside runs, slants etc.

Scott is a major riser for me and if Bland wants to move outside, he would be on my shortlist for sure.

Bray Hubbard's stats are better than Caleb Downs.. Downs gets all the hype while Hubbard just keep making plays against better competition.

or maybe Downs is so good no one tries him while with Hubbard the QBs are willing to challenge

Downs is a monster...I am normally a money position guy drafting in the top 15 but he can legit do everything.

Like he is legit the kind of guy you can build a defense around.

The kid from Oregon is also a stud...likely late 1st.

I really like the top 3 safeties, those two and the USC prospect. However, Downs is far and away the best at the position and has star potential. This draft reminds me of when Kyle Hamilton was being projected as the top prospect before the offseason started. I don't think Downs will run a bad 40 time like Hamilton did, but the position he plays will have him slide a little bit. Last safety drafted in the top 10 is Jamal Adams years ago.

how much production did Deion get?

Ed Reed averaged 5 ints and 10 PDs per year
Sanders was by far the better prospect then Ed Reed was, think he had like 15 interceptions on the college level and was a top 10 pick cause of it.

Yea I think prime Adams is a good comp.

If you want more of a true FS the dude from Oregon is probably better. He might the best FS prospect I can remember since Hooker.

I don’t place a ton of value on safety early in R1. If we were picking in the back of the first round, sure.

Downs may be nice but I don’t think safety is a transformative position.
Talent is transformational. Safety is an impactful position if the talent is there i.e. Reid, Woodson, Lott, ect.

These guys were are all HOFers. Woodson and Lott were also All Pros at cornerback. I don’t see that versatility with Downs; he doesn’t play deep safety for OSU let alone corner. We all know Ed Reed made his name in coverage.

Downs’ strength is coming downhill and playing underneath in short to medium range coverages.

None of what I’m saying means I wouldn’t draft him. We need to improve at the safety position. Downs is a very solid tackler and leader which this defense needs.

What I would like to see is the team add a veteran fa starter to replace Hooker. Believe they save 7 million if they make him a June 1st cut. Then team him up with a Branch type safety, one who can be versatile enough to play multiple positions. This fits Downs to a tee, but the other two behind him also have similar abilities, just not as elite doing it.
