Roy's coverage deficiencies were overblown, and his run support hugely underappreciated. Still, he was a liability in coverage and having options back there that don't have to be schemed around in the passing game will be a plus. Also, it's nice having the board quiet on the topic.

I'm *much* more concerned about our LB depth, honestly. Our starters are capable, but depth across the board is completely unrpoven.

This talk of his run support is mostly fallacy, the last couple of seasons he left a lot to be desired.

not really man, last season he was broken, the season before last he was on point with his run defense.

He was always pretty darn good against the run, no one ever mentioned it though.

Last season the D got gashed for some huge runs, and it's not a coincidence that Roy wasn't in there.

There's no doubt that at the start of his career he was one of the most feared defenders/tacklers the game had seen in a while. He appeared to be on his way to being mentioned in the same breath as great Safeties like Ronnie Lott and Jack Tatum. But as soon as Woodson was gone, he seemed to slowly start his decline.

While I recognize that he was "broken" (as you put it) last season, I still saw the steady decline continue while healthy. He's a guy that really needs a fresh start, I think that Dallas releasing him is one of the best things that has happened in his football career.

Granted, but do you think it's fair to say that his abilities have been in decline over the years?

Absolutely.

...but his detractors were comparing him to sociopaths and genocidal dictators in order to devalue him towards the end. It was absolutely ridiculous. I was as thrilled about the fact that there would be fewer threads on the subject as I was about our ability to upgrade the position when he left.

I must have missed all of that; I would never go that far. But I do think that he was one of the poorer all-around Safeties the league had to offer over the past couple of seasons.

he stopped blowing people up, but he was still effective, just not as flashy.

couple that with his eroded(if they ever were) cover skills and it was easy to see why the fanbase turned on him.

I still wish him well, and hope he proves he still has something left.

This thread is a complete joke... Sorry but the addition of Gerald Sensabough and Mike Hamlin just made the Cowboys better at the position.

I couldn't agree more... Roy Williams isn't a pro bowl type safety anymore.

Remember, we played some of our best defense last year when Keith Davis was playing strong safety. Keith Freaking Davis!

My only concern is that we're kind of small in the secondary. I hope we have enough people to stop Brandon Jacobs or other big backs. But at least more people to the ball can stop that.

Ken Hamlin got moved to Strong Safety guys.
I don't think so.

I want to see the Safeties play before I say I'm not worried about them. Hamlin was not very good last year.

That's where we differ, because Roy Williams wasn't even close to one of the poorer all-around safeties in the league the past couple of seasons. Unless you're counting the time where he was on IR.

And run support is far and away the best part of his game. We missed him there last year, and we're going to miss him there again this year. Hopefully, that's more than made up for with the additional coverage ability we brought in this season.

been a while since I felt like this over our safety position...doesn't look good. Our strength lies up front so you guys feel like were gonna get passed on a lot this year?
:horse: Can we at least wait until TC to see how our new Safeties play? What's the purpose of worrying about it now?
