Roy's coverage deficiencies were overblown, and his run support hugely underappreciated. Still, he was a liability in coverage and having options back there that don't have to be schemed around in the passing game will be a plus. Also, it's nice having the board quiet on the topic.

I'm *much* more concerned about our LB depth, honestly. Our starters are capable, but depth across the board is completely unrpoven.

Oh stop it! His coverage inability was not overblown and his run support was average at best towards the end when he forgot how to use his arms to tackle instead of protect himself during the hit.

Emphasize the was. I'm going to be real surprised if he comes back anywhere near the player he used to be.

Sensabough makes me feel better back there than who we had before, and it sounds like the coaches notice his coverage ability. Of course it's early, very early, but any improvement in coverage at the safety position...I'll take it.

I think this is the most promise the safety position has shown in some years Sensabough is looking like he can cover someone and Ken Hamlin is very capable of having a good year. A lot will depend on how quickly the younger players evolve. Only major concern for me is the offensive line, starter wise I feel good about the group backups a lot less confident.

That's where we differ, because Roy Williams wasn't even close to one of the poorer all-around safeties in the league the past couple of seasons. Unless you're counting the time where he was on IR.

And run support is far and away the best part of his game. We missed him there last year, and we're going to miss him there again this year. Hopefully, that's more than made up for with the additional coverage ability we brought in this season.
There's no doubt that run support was the best part of his game, but that still doesn't make him a good run stopper. Anyway, we're starting to go in circles now; the guy just wasn't a good player anymore and was expendable because of it.

If you consider, despite Newman being out for 6 weeks with injury, Pacman being out for 6 weeks for suspension, Anthony Henry has clearly lost a step and never was ideally sized for CB, and Roy Williams (SS) was placed on IR early in the year and after him SS was a turnstile with Pat Watkins (placed on IR midseason), Courtney Davis, Tra Battle and Keith Davis sharing time (inhale) the Cowboy's still finished the season 5th against the pass; I'd say we have very little to worry about as far as the Safety position is concerned.

:horse: Can we at least wait until TC to see how our new Safeties play? What's the purpose of worrying about it now?

I live about 15 minutes from the alamodome and I will get lots of footage of practice sessions we'll see. Some people are saying that Ken hamlin is going to be the SS?????? if that's the case we are in serious trouble. But I don't believe that, Hamlin's tackling skills are not that great, and what position did sens play before????

We will be much more athletic at safety this year. And don't sleep on Michael Hamlin.

The optimism over M. Hamlin reminds me of how people were calling a certain low round FS the next Merton Hanks....

I'm letting this drop because I have no interest in another RW debate, but not because I agree with either of you.

From what I've read coming out of the OTAs, Sensabaugh is doing well with his coverage responsibilities. He's not a super freak at SS by any means, but he's athletic and is showing the ability to do a decent job covering, and his run support has generally been pretty good during his career.

As for Hamlin, now that he has someone capable playing beside him, perhaps he'll rebound to his 2007 form.

This thread is a complete joke... Sorry but the addition of Gerald Sensabough and Mike Hamlin just made the Cowboys better at the position.

I doubt Mike Hamlin contibutes this year. Since we'll carry 2 kickers on game days, he won't make the active roster very often.

I believe Sens played both safety positions for the Jags. Hamlin stays at FS w/ Sens at SS. We may be sacrificing some in the tackling area w/ hopes that coverage from both safety positions will improve. Looking forward to you posting your pics when TC starts!

I doubt Watkins makes the team so MHamlin will need to be active to be the backup safety and also play STs. I doubt the coaches want DeAngelo Smith or Alan Ball playing SS in an injury situation.

Absolutely nothing about Hamlin reminds me of Watkins.

Thats precisely the reason I'm so optimistic. That, and I watched his stock fall as a result of a mid-season coaching change and a very depleted defense. Hamlin was the lone bright spot. High character guy, was a team captain, and he was projected to go much higher before his team fell apart.

pretty sure no one has said that for years, people have been *****ing about roy for as long as I could remember.

I was sad to see him go, though I admit I like not hearing the complaints any longer.

everything indicates sensebaugh is a huge coverage upgrade, and hamlin is capable, assuming that one year wasn't a fluke.

Our run support scares me a lot more than our potential pass coverage.

regardless of what people say about roy, he was pretty darn good against the run.

Agreed more worried about run defense in the secondary
