Safety tandem that strikes fear?

There's been a lot of talk about Ahmad Dixon recently after his 597 tackle performance against San Diego the other night. That's one thing Dixon has always excelled at - lighting people up. He could display his talents because the DL and LBs were so bad, there were a lot of tackles to be made.

But Good Lord, he couldn't cover jobberone running around on the field wearing steel-toed boots.

That kind of player usually ends up being a player who is a ST demon. Good hitter - liability in coverage. But Dixon is better than just a ST demon. We could, possibly, if it all works out right (doubtful), have something special going on.

Kam Chancellor. Known as one of the most violent hitters in the NFL. He's what you would call a "tone setter", because he lets the offense know how it's gonna be.

Chancellor and Dixon are similar players. They both hit hard, they are both kind of slow (40 Times of 4.56/4.62), and both aren't very great against the pass.

Since Chancellor is such a sure tackler, and Pete Carroll's #1 priority is to stop the run, he is dropped inside to create an 8-man box quite frequently. But that leaves a lot of potential spaces for WRs to exploit. So how do they prevent that?

One way they do it is with a kid named Earl Thomas, and he's the best Safety in the NFL.

Thomas is an athlete. At 5'10, 210 lbs, he is a very fluid Safety who makes plays in the passing game. He can cover. He can read the QBs eyes well. He's what you want from a FS. That's why Chancellor can run around and light people up - he has someone who can make plays in the passing game. They're an excellent tandem. If only we had a guy like that.

Oh wait, we do.

Someone who ran the same 40 time. The same 10 yard dash time. He did a foot better in the broad jump. You know who I mean.

JJ Wilcox.

He's a fluid athlete. He can make plays in the passing game. He has instincts. He can keep up with and cover receivers. JJ Wilcox is what you want from a FS. He's lacking in experience, but he's getting better. He played well the other night, from the limited time we saw.

Do we have "that" tandem? Do we have the guy who can strike fear into offenses, makes plays in the running game, and the guy that makes it possible?

Someone, make me snap out of it. Because I believe we do.

I like your train of thought, BUT, Wilcox and Dixon are light years away from striking fear into anyone.

The lack of respect for Barry Church on this board is disgusting. You want a "better" Dixon with experience? He's already playing SS for us and led the team in tackles last year. Wake up.

I'm with you. Church is what Dixon can only hope to be at this point, and I do believe if Wilcox shows he can handle the back end of coverage, Church will get his chance to be that extra run defender who lights people up.

I don't understand the hate towards Barry Church as well on this board. I believe Church is a solid player and it would take more than 1 preseason game to unseat a player like Church.

If anything Dixon and Wilcox would be fighting for the same SS spot oppose to having Dixon back up Church at the Free Safety Spot.

And to think some are asking where the depth will come from...I still love Church.

I'm a big fan of Wilcox, but he didn't run the same forty as Thomas.

Earl Thomas
Forty 4.43 and 4.37
Ten 1.56 and 1.49

Wilcox
Forty 4.51
Ten 1.55

I'm about to get slammed for this.

I like Church, but I don't view him as a great SS like some people do. On a good defensive team, he would not be a starting SS. I commend him for the effort and heart he puts into it, though.

Whoops site I was on listed them both at 4.43. You're right.

The biggest things are the 10 yard dash and the broad jump. They were both very similar, with Wilcox being even better than Thomas. Shows their explosiveness and acceleration.

I dont want to strike fear, I want them to cover.

Not too fast there, still developing, I'd settle in on a black 'n blue zone anywhere behind the line of scrimmage and on Dallas real estate.

I'll be happy if we can get two guys who can play at a relatively high level. I do kind of like our S group, overall, at this point. Which is saying something as I've really not liked that personnel here in Dallas for years. Church is really underrated (I think he's behind Scandrick as our second-best defensive player until Melton or Crawford can demonstrate otherwise), and I like all the young guys with the exception of Heath, and even Heath has been impressive in his ability to show up in the vicinity of a play being made. He just can't close the deal for whatever reason.
