Saints back in hunt for CB McKenzie
Friday, September 24, 2004
Sources on Thursday said the Saints have re-entered trade talks with Green Bay about cornerback Mike McKenzie. The sources also said another NFL team is involved.
The Saints have discussed the trade with the Packers for the six-year veteran since the spring, but Green Bay has asked for a first-round draft pick in return, a price the Saints aren't willing to meet.
An NFL source said the Saints have offered a second-round draft pick and a lower-round pick or a player.
The NFL trade deadline is Oct. 19. McKenzie held out of training camp and was activated Sept. 15. He is expected to start for the Packers on Sunday against Indianapolis.
HORN TURNS DOWN VOLUME: In four-plus seasons with the Saints, Joe Horn has consistently produced two things: catches and quotes.
He's still cranking out the former. Horn ranks third in the NFC with 14 receptions and 204 receiving yards.
However, the normally loquacious Horn has tempered the trash talk. On Thursday he refused to be coaxed into providing any bulletin-board material for the St. Louis Rams, the Saints' opponent Sunday at the Edward Jones Dome.
Asked about the Rams, a team the Saints beat three out of five times during the 2000 and 2001 seasons, Horn played nice.
"I can't say nothing negative about them and try to spark a rivalry," Horn said. "You want to know why? They've been to multiple Super Bowls -- Isaac (Bruce), Torry (Holt), all those guys. . . .
"We can talk all we want to talk, but until we accomplish all the things those guys have accomplished, we can't say a negative thing about those guys. Coach (Mike) Martz has done a hell of a job."
Horn, likewise, refused to be drawn into reacting to Rams tight end Cam Cleeland's comments about the Saints and Coach Jim Haslett.
"That's just Cam getting off some frustrations that he felt," Horn said. "Obviously, he felt he didn't get treated right when he was here. . . . He and (former Saints offensive tackle) Kyle (Turley) had some issues that they didn't like (with the organization). But they're very good friends of mine, and I love 'em to death."
NO COMMENT: A day after Cleeland ripped him and the Saints, Haslett deflected questions about the comments.
Asked if he was surprised by Cleeland's remarks, Haslett said, "No. You guys can run with that one."
Asked if he was going to be looking for Cleeland on the sideline Sunday, he said, "I don't think so."
BROOKS HONORED: Quarterback Aaron Brooks was selected the NFL Player of the Week for his performance against San Francisco. Brooks completed 25 of 34 attempts for 279 yards and three touchdowns for a passer rating of 127.0.
STAYING DOWNSTAIRS: Haslett said offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy will call plays from the sideline for the rest of the season. McCarthy worked the regular-season opener and all four preseason games from the press box. Haslett cited two reasons behind his decision: One, only three top-11 offenses in the NFL last season had their coordinators call plays from the booth; and two, Brooks is more comfortable with McCarthy on the sideline. "I was happy with the way things worked," Haslett said.
HIGH PRAISE: Former Fortier High School standout Aeneas Williams is expected to start at cornerback for the Rams this week. Williams has switched from free safety because of injuries to DeJuan Groce and Travis Fisher. Rich Coady will assume Williams' free safety spot.
"He's a great football player, a great athlete," Haslett said of Williams. "I don't think he'll have a problem, based on what they do on defense. He'll move right in."
ETC.: Backup quarterback Todd Bouman will be the emergency punter if Mitch Berger's groin injury prevents him from finishing the game Sunday, Haslett said. Place-kicker John Carney, who will continue to kick off, is also available to punt. . . . Tight end Zachary Hilton received interest from Minnesota before re-signing with the Saints' practice squad. The Vikings signed Scott Berton to the active roster instead. To make room for Hilton, the Saints waived linebacker Billy Strother from the practice squad. . . . The Rams added rookie linebacker Brandon Chiller to the injury report Thursday. He did not practice but is probable with a foot injury.
