NFL needs to make exceptions to their steroid policy, and this is one of them.

DUHHHHHHH. It's probably because that's not what he tested positive for. The league never reveals what the substance is. People are suckered into believing ******** stories like this so as to save face and protect the athlete's marketability. Remeber these two words: catabolic...and anabolic. one builds muscle (anabolic), the other destroys muscle (catbolic). The one in Advair is catabolic. This is more B.S. like Shawn Meriman saying his body transformed an over the counter supplement into nandralone (commonly called by it's trade name of Deca-Durabolin which is the longest acting anabolic steroid known to man...positive tests have happened a year after use in olympic testing). Just don't happen. If it did, EVERY athlete in the country would be using it. Ask any college level and above football player what "deca" is and I guarantee they'll know. It is renowned for it's mild properties and healing abilities relative to soreness and muscle damage. These guys play the odds just like betting horses, only they get caught every once in a while. Don't buy into the B.S. that there is false positives and all that crap. It's plain B.S. and I would have a great deal more respect for the athlete if they would at least own up to it when they're caught.

Ok, wait...this dude is on the same stuff my wife takes. How can the NFL suspend a guy for a doctor prescribed medication?

During his August drug test, the defensive tackle was taking an asthma product called Advair twice a day while also using an inhaler four times a day.

"Advair contains both the steroid fluticasone and the long acting beta agonist galmeterol," wrote Amoss, who thought the possibility of a false positive might have happened.

After taking the information under consideration, the league ruled Thomas was in violation of the policy and he will be lost to the team for the remainder of the regular season.

That ruling is just asinine. What about players recovering from muscle tears and stuff? I know doctors use steroids as a legit rehab tool...that's what they are for, medically speaking. If a doc prescribes something with roids in it you are STILL suspended? Man, the NFL knows better than docs, huh?

BTW, if Advair is a strong enough steroid to get you suspended should I be expecting my wife to acquire a deep voice, big muscles and enlarged...nether regions?

It is the players responsibility, but it is too bad!

:hammer:
Also how about the mediots just glossing over the fact that Shawn Meriman was juicing. Since he has been back they have been acting like he was out with an injury, if it were a cowboy or a cowboy with the initials T and O we would never hear the end of it.

I agree it sucks, but these guys shouldn't take a thing until it gets an approval from the league. They need to be smarter.

You know, if I was an NFL player who had asthma and had to take a (catabolic) STEROID, it would probably cross my mind at some point that it might be a decent copout should certain questions about "supplements" arise.

Now, I'm not saying that's the deal, hell, none of know what the deal is right now. However, like trueblue suggested, it looks like it's the player and his people saying it was something that's found in asthma medication, not the league.

Dude,

First of all, if the guy is taking Advair he wouldn't need to use an inhaler 4 times daily also. If that was the case, he's in incredibly bad shape. That just doesn't happen. Secondly, even if that was the case they can tease out whether or not the substance is fluticasone and whether or not the quantities found substantiate the "prescription strength" aspect of the story.

Asthmatics on inhalers abound in the NFL - why is it that THIS one guy somehow has so much that he gets suspended unfairly?

Because it's not the prescription stuff they found.

Ok, but what about anabolic steroids? Doctors do prescribe them for injuries and stuff. If you are in the NFL that's just too bad? You have to wait longer to heal than Carl the postman? Does the NFL make exceptions to the steroid policy if it is prescribed?

Sorry, but you don't know what you're talking about. Asthmatics MUST take something or - usually - they can't BREATHE. There is a condition called "exercise-induced asthma" as well.

"Sorry, but I'm not taking this until I get special clearance from the league" for most of these guys might mean getting permission - as a dead man. Hard to be a good linebacker if, for example, you're DEAD.

So I spent a few minutes on google....

Advair has two active ingredients, Fluticasone and Salmeterol. Link

Fluticasone is the catabolic steroid, and is used to reduce inflammation. Salmeterol is a beta-2 agonist (whatever that means) and is used for long-term dilation of the airways. Basically, Fluticasone would be the ingredient that could potentially set off alarm bells.

Anyway, I found a list of the drugs that are on the NFL's Banned Substance List. Guess what? No catabolic steroid section, and no mention of Fluticasone. I even checked for Salmeterol for laughs, nothing.

Long story short, I don't see how Thomas would test positive because of Advair and then also lose the appeal if the steroid in Advair isn't even on their banned substance list.

His agent mentioned Advair as possibly giving his test a false positive, not that Advair's ingredients are banned by the league. It was just a last ditch effort by the agent that the league wasn't going to buy, but apparently the media and their sheep did.

There you go, another handicap for the media darlings (COWBOYS) to get an advantage. It really irks me, Dallas is at full strength, correct me if i'm wrong but Greg Ellis is the only injury for ya'll. If the Saints were in the same situation, NO CONTEST the cowboys would get so exposed on Sunday night it wouldn't even be funny. Now, with half of our playmakers out, it'll be more of an even game.

BTW, FIRST POST!! THANKS FOR HAVING ME!!

This is just spin-control on the agent's part - anything to make his client look innocent when he in reality he is guilty of cheating.
