Since the 2004 season, the defending Super Bowl champion has hosted the NFL’s showcased Kickoff game. That tradition will continue in 2010 as Drew Brees and the Saints will play host in the game scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 9.
The actual opponent won’t be known until the league releases its schedule in April, although eight teams on the Saints’ home schedule are in contention: Atlanta, Carolina, Tampa Bay, St. Louis, Seattle, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Minnesota.
No matter the opponent, odds are in the Saints’ favor of winning the game. Since 2002 (when the Kickoff game was introduced), the host team is 7-1 and the defending Super Bowl champion is a 6-0.
