I think we should give Leary a 2nd round tender offer next year and Free...Well he is not looking too good right now, so let's see after the season is over.

If Leary is a RFA next year, then a second round tender makes a lot of sense.

I'm not sure there will be bit I'm not a cap guru. If he balls out he's going to want at least 16-18 mil a year.

I just don't see Hardy having much of a impact here this season that would warrant a big long term contract. This is going to be a rusty year for him. Its going to be all about knocking off the rust.

Yes, but with our focus on a 4man rush, we will need several good pass rushers. They are the main factor in the entire defensive scheme.

We need Hardy, Gregory, and Lawrence, as well as Crawford.

Crawford and Lawrence will flash but I have a difficult time seeing either as consistent pass rush threats. I think they are/will be good players but not guys you can't count on to provide pass rush. Gregory is the one guy who looks like a natural and will probably be an effective pass rusher. But you need more than that if you are hoping to build a D that can win playoff games vs elite level QBs. As I said, if Hardy is even 90% of what we last saw from him in a full season, it's a no-brainier to try to re-sign him. Sign Hardy and use the draft to supplement the secondary and whatever needs there are on offense.

Possibly. But he didn't suddenly forget how to play. He's still a relatively young player. Barring an unforeseen shocking decline in physical skills, you have to assume he will return to (or very close to) greatness if not this year, next season.

I don't think it's about skill. I just think his body has to get back to in game shape. It's a lot better than coming back 6 games left into the season but from what I saw from him in limited action in preseason......it's going to take some time.

I don't the Cowboys have the room to sign him. On plus side Gregory and Lawrence should be pretty good next year. Young too.

DAL can be 40m under the cap with a few cuts(Carr, Free, DMC, Gachkar) and a couple restructures(TSmith).

They would have GHardy, Ro McClain, Mincey, Bern, Leary(RFA), Dunbar, Claiborne, CWhite to think on.

I would much rather pay GHardy than anyone else on that list.

I would be careful cutting Carr. I know his cap number is inflated but Claiborne could easily leave and we don't know what Scandrick recovery looks like. I would prefer: Scandrick, Jones and Carr. Also, Jones might be more of S. I think Hardy will be good player but he will simple ask too much. Maybe I am wrong but I have seen his type too many times.

I thought a lot about it, but if it means Hardy or Carr, I want Hardy.

With OScan, BJones, Patmon, CWhite(FA) the cupboard is far from bare. The 18m cap hit for Carr and Claiborne can be spent much more efficiently.

Couple of games you limit his reps and he will be good to go
Once Gregory is back he won't have to play that many downs with a good rotation of him with Gregory and Lawrence
Long term I suspect hardy is going to be very expensive

Do we have the wherewithal financially to sign Hardy to a long term contract without it affecting our ability to re-sign the key young Cowboys(i.e. Frederick, Martin, etc..)?

I initially thought Hardy would be a 1 year rental and I was fine with that. Now, I'm strongly leaning towards trying to re-sign Hardy to a long-term deal. Of course, assuming the team is comfortable that Hardy's issues are behind him. We have some nice young pieces on the DL but not quite enough IMO to let Hardy walk freely out the door. He seems to be a great teammate and embraced the role as a leader. Assuming he returns to even 90% of the player he was in 2013, he's still an elite DL. It's a lot easier to fill out a defense when you're pretty set up front with Hardy, Gregory, Crawford and Lawrence among your top 5-6 DL for a few years.

If Hardy plays as well as advertised, signing him might be more important than signing the other guys.

I hope you're right. I would love to keep both Leary and Collins. I didn't even think about Free being the odd man out. That said, I can just see someone like Washington or Philly making Leary an offer that we won't/can't match.

Washington is an interesting choice considering Callahan is there now.

It took Peterson all of 1 game to shake the rust off and he's much older and didn't have a single snap in preseason. A couple of games maybe, but 12 to shake the rust off? That sounds more like a not good player than rust.

So did DeMarco.

Sure, but RBs are fairly easy to replace (remember DeMarco was a 3rd round pick). DEs with double digit sacks are not - and they very rarely hit the FA market in the first place.

I was just thinking about Washington needing some OLine help and didn't even consider the Callahan connection...that makes the possibility even more plausible.

If they take Leary for a 2nd round tender and they have a crappy year, a low 2nd round pick would be a beautiful thing!
