Salary Cap Status

Post 2018 is the earliest they can extend either Dak or Zeke. Per the CBA, renegotiations can not begin until after the player's third season.

Like you said, Dak will only be an RFA, so might be able to get a team friendly deal (compared to open market UFA) by "buying out" his final year (~800k) with an extension after his third season. He gets the safety of a bigger contract and the team gets a friendlier deal. Win-Win scenario.

dak will get his $. he has no incentive to leave given the young core and strong OL. the only concern is dez's age.
i hope that he signs a team friendly deal post 2018 that gives him $20M/year but will not handicap the team. jerry is a proven deal closer, and he will not do stupid negotiating stuff like the Commanders and the jets.

Dak will not be a RFA in 2019.... he is under contract for 4 years and will be a UFA in 2020

You are right that the earliest he could be extended is the Spring of 2019

I think he takes more guaranteed money and less APY..... something like 4/60m with 100% gtd
Those numbers would be insulting if Dak has another season similar to 2016. He'll be looking at more than 20 mil a yr no matter how you spin it.

Dak is on a late 4th round contract turning down 60m that is 100% guaranteed is very hard

He would be buying out his 2019 deal that only pays 800k and would still re-do his new deal after 3 years...... do the math it is still around 20m APY but it is structured to help the team

The first 20m is the most important

Maybe, or maybe he'll pull a Tom Brady.

Were going to find out a lot about dak this year. Tons of teams with good defenses to play this year. Also a good year for the rookies on D to adjust. Mostly teams with weak offenses.

Yes, I should have clarified that his RFA year was 2020 and not 2019. I was focusing more on the 2019 extension after the third year.

I think you're money is a little light but that's the type of deal I can see happening. Below market APY but high on the guarantees. Works for both. Dak get's a big raise over his 4th year that also acts as an insurance policy guaranteeing payment if god forbid something happens; and the Cowboys lock in their franchise QB on a team friendly deal.

We're contenders right now.

The perfect team does not exist.
I hope our defense surprises the hell out of us, but I don't think a bunch of rookies are going to be a top 10 defense, which you must have to be a contender.

Look at the Falcons defense last year. Far from top 10. We had a better defense last year then they did.

You win with great strengths in the NFL and we have a great run game.

New England sure as heck didn't win the Super Bowl because of their defense.

The Patriots ended the regular season as the top scoring defense, and Tom Brady has had a top 10 scoring defense every year. Only like 6 teams have won a SB with out a top 10 D.

I'm saying he will be getting around 14 mil a year with his extension.

On average. But we can play with the numbers if we wanted to go after a worthy FA.

Zeitler got 5 years and 60 million, but his cap hit for 2017 is 8.4 million.
Doubtful he ever sees that 5th year at age 31 where his cap hit is 14.4 million.

Same could be for Martin, or if he is still balling we can restructure+ add years/guarantees if he is still playing at a high level towards the end of his deal.

If by scoring defense you mean Points Allowed then we were top 5.

OK. I can live with that.

The cap will need to be put in order.

If Prescott plays like last year (not a given), he will be looking at $30M a year by the time his contract is up. Zeke? I think $12-$15M. a year.

I understand the cap will rise. Likely $200M+. But that would still be a huge percentage of the overall cap.

Its going to be a huge challenge to keep them both when the time comes. Until then, lets hope we can win a Super Bowl or 2.

We'll likely get Dak cheaper than market value for the same reason the Seahawks were able to get RWilson cheaper than market value. Once Dak is eligible for an extension, after year three, his base salary will be at most $700k or so? Holding out for $25 million a year, when you are being offered $20 a year, makes little sense when it would take 4 years to make what you would lose by playing out the final year of your deal. If $30 is what he's worth after 3 years, then it makes even less sense to hold out when being offered $25, because then it takes 6 years to make up the difference

Stephen has said on multiple occasions that the new Cowboys strategy is to pay their FA's who deserve second
and third contracts. The will not be paying inflated salaries to FA from other teams but, using the cap to fill holes
with mid-level and bargain FAs. Their focus is to keep drafting good players and let FA's walk they don't want to
keep so that they max out comp picks. The strategy is clear for all to see. Hopefully, no more Mr. Hardy pickups
that costs bundles of money but, no production.
This is it in a nutshell. Stephen is a genius.

Thier formula in the draft (RKG) They recognize it and have been slowly perfecting the process that yields:
1. Motivated athletes that are capable of excelling at a higher level. (Great Ex. Gathers)
2. Many described as being leaders on thier respected teams.
3. SPARQ Athletically gifted talents

I believe this plays in perfectly to the plan you were able to point out.

They are able to recognize these same RKG's in free agents as well. Such as Irving, Mayowa and even the Carroll contract was genius, a low commitment with a high floor player. They had this deal wrapped up knowing thier own intentions of not bringing back Carr and Claiborne GENIUS

Addittions of solid veterans Stephen Paea
Byron Bell Robert Blanton

Guys like Jonathon Cooper and Demantre Moore who have bounced around but Cowboys feel they could motivate them to reach they potential. High reward with little or no risk.

Garrett is smart and after the Hardy Fiasco he learned his lesson fast.

I love the direction this team is moving in

$20m makes sense. he would not be insulted with the offer. team gets team friendly deal.
