Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel, a free agent limited by the franchise tag, wants to be traded.
"This is to let everybody know that I'm not happy anymore and things are not going well," Samuel told Schefter. "At first I thought it was going well, but it's not. We have a difference of opinion in my value. They think I'm worth one price and the other teams think I'm worth a lot more. If a long-term deal can’t be done at fair numbers for me and New England, then I want to be traded."
Samuel says that he is prepared to sit out the season, if need be. "If it's best for me and my family," Samuel said, "I will do that. Absolutely."
Sure. Look, none of these franchise players is going to miss a paycheck. So look for Samuel to sign his tender on the eve of the start of the regular season, and collect game checks worth more than $458,000 each. That's almost as much as he made for the entire season in 2006.
The problem is that the Pats have shelled out plenty of money for multiple free agents in the past month, and Samuel has been paying close attention.
"I've been patient, haven't said anything bad, haven't said anything negative," Samuel said. "But my patience has run out. Business is business. They handled their business their way and I'm handling my business my way. I hope not, I really hope not, but it's looking more and more like it could be time to move on." (Or move out.)

This just came up,thought I pass it along.

I really wanted Dallas to make a run at this guy until N.E. franchised him. He would put our D over the top.

If he starts crying and saying that $458K a game won't feed his family, I will personally fly up to New England and shoot him myself.

Just 2 questions. Anyone know the answers.

What would it cost to sign him?

What would we have to give to NE to get him?

You could look at Clements' deal and go from there. Clements received an 8-year $80 million deal with $22 million in guarantees. I'm sure it works out to him getting about $30 million in the first 3 years. Unfortunately, the NFLPA blocked public access to player contracts, so we can't tell anymore.

As for what it would take to get him away from New England? Negotiations would probably start at a first rounder plus.

That and he wasn't exactly dominant. He made plays this past year for certain but that was the by-product of chasing the money and New England's system. They actually have started Troy Brown and been successful, so I don't see where can reasonably say he stands out.

He's the cornerback version of Deion Branch. A player that thinks more of himself than he is worth and New England isn't falling for it.

The Patriots did not win three Super Bowls in the last decade by being stupid. They could draft another part and plug him into their machine and be just fine.

You're probably right about Samuel. Still, he's a very good player and has every right to hold out on a long-term deal that's in Clements' territory.

At least he's handling himself well so far. When you look at the money the team spent on Thomas and Stallworth, it'd be hard to justify giving NE a hometown discount at this point.

The worst part about all of this is that as always it starts and ends with the DL.

Your front 3 or 4 can dominate than it trickles down to the LBs and DBs.

Samuel is a very good player but certainly not worth the trade it would take to get him.

There is a reason you dont hear "coverage sack" very often. The typical sayings are " blitz package" and "front 7-8 pressure".

How about Eric Wright in the 2nd round for even less? :)

IMO, this guy is a product of the New England system.

Remember "Larry Brown"? The raiders do..........

We most certainly do have a glaring hold at CB. Aaron Glenn is/will shortly be 35 & Henry turns 31. Even Newman turns 29 this year & neither Reeves nor Nate Jones are potential starters. While an improved/consistent pass rush would help the secondary, age is against both Glenn & Henry and the time is now to grab a good young CB who could challenge Glenn immediately or step in for Henry if he should get injuried, etc. I'm hoping Revis will be available when we pick at #22 but he'll probably be gone by then so Ross will be okay or we take a WR at #22 and draft a CB in the 2nd round.

A HOLE means that at that time there is NOT a good starter there. We really do not have any holes right now. REAL holes.

I agree, a healthy Henry is a good CB and I still believe that A Glenn is a good CB. Glenn can still cover, his size just gets him in trouble now and then. Even on the deep balls that he is beat on, he is right with his man.

Think Nate Clements plus 5% I'm sure.

We will have no depth very soon. Glenn will not last forever and I don't see anyone else on the roster with starting potential. Both Reeves and Jones make me nervous just by being in the nickel.

To sign Samuel (if possible) would be back breaking expensive. Not just because we are signing him, but because Newman will be coming due right after him. The question is, can you (or any team for that matter) afford two of the top CBs in the league and still afford to put a competitive team on the field.

We can't afford two $80 million CBs and that is what we are looking at with Newman at the end of the season.

Drafting one to eventually replace Henry is far better idea. If not the first with Ross or Houston or Revis then possibly round 2 or 3 with Michael Coe.

Remember Fred Bennett at South Carolina was thought to be a definite 1st round guy until a bad second half of his senior year and could be had probably in the 5th or 6th round. I would take the chance on him there.
