Agree. I think we have seen the last of Rat & probably Spencer.

Spencer is interesting. The new CBA is killing big dollars and he didn't get the offers last year he expected.
After a year away from the game hard to imagine those big offers magically appear.

I think he may end up back here because he has as much value to us as anyone.

good grief fans can be stupid, short-sighted people.

Ratliff earned the money he is being paid now for his past play.
He was a 4 time pro bowler and 1 time All Pro.
He made the rookie minimum on his first contract
His next contract was for HALF of what Chris Canty got paid in NY.

His 3rd and final contract was rich and he hasn't come close to making it a value but his career has been a plus and his career earnings at best a slight value for his level of play. He will make ~25m for entire career.

I do think he is done here. Too beat up and too expensive now to be worthwhile. He'll get cut next year and he'll never see 30m of that 48m deal.

Ratliff and Witten have been the best values the Cowboys have had the past decade when you combine all factors (draft status/salary/performance).

IF Ratliff can come back this year and help this team that is a VERY nice bonus. We don't need Ratliff to win the NFCE but he would be most useful in the playoffs at even 75% of his peak.

For an apparently smart guy sometimes you say stuff that just makes me shake my head in wonder

The NFL is a business
To stay competitive year in and year out you don't pay ANYONE on past performance
You pay players on future performance

You do not pay players for future performance because you do not know what the future performance will be.
You pay them for what they have accomplished up til now.
You HOPE you are paying for future performance but it NEVER works that way.

Since no one has a crystal ball you are paying for the past.
The NFL rookie caps and salary structure dictate this.

When a player is a free agent they are ranked based on the past.
Sure teams can guess as to what they'll do in a certain scheme or in a few years but all it is, is a guess.
Injuries and a zillion other factors come into play.
But the player's market and the price you must pay are determined by his PAST play.

Probably not. I think he just never wanted to play for Jerry again.

As a 33 year old free agent I imagine he can get offers but not sure any would be rich enough to warrant further abuse to his body.

I can see him join the Texans and Wade but again it would be for peanuts so is a long shot at best imho.

Interesting that no one in the Dallas media has the balls to see what's really going on here with Ratliff.

Ratliff threatened local media with assault.
Part of why the fan base is against him so harshly is the media keeps whispering what a bad guy he is.
No one in the media is doing him any favors.

According to the post game show, per Jerry, Ratiliffe will probably not be back when he's suppose to come off of PUP and probably out for season.

In a way I am grateful to Spent and the Rat.

They half hastened our need to revamp the D talentwise.
Ware and Lee half 5 goods years left. Let us build around them. But secondary comes first, then the D line.

Past Production is just one part
The real question is what can they produce over the length of their contract ?
Not pie in the sky but realistically, what can the team expect from them?

Other factors like age, injury history and attitude all should come into play
This is why you don't franchise or give long-term contracts to average to above average players around 30 because older players get injured
This is esp true if the player has an injury history or poor work habits/attitude

Unfortunately our GM never met a cowboys player he didn't over-rate or couldn't over-pay

Again, all guesses.
Our GM has let plenty of guys walk.
Our fanbase only desires to talk about the misses.
But he chose the lesser rated Ratliff over Canty, he let Felix/Jenkins/MartyB and others walk.

At the time Ratliff was an All-Pro player under 30 years old. He had made Pro Bowls 4 years in a row.
Any GM would have paid him quite well.
Dallas guaranteed him 18 million. 5 or 6 of that was already scheduled from the previous contract.
Was a 50m total insane? Sure. But he was never earning 18 million of that total. That was year 6 and year 7. Pure fluffer.

What would you pay Geno Atkins right now? Is he worth a 50m deal? Is anyone?
Ratliff was Geno Atkins when Jerry signed him to that deal.

I speculate that Ratliffs injury was mishnandled by the Cowboys doctors...and the Cowboy organization, understandly so,...wanted a return on their investment and rushed him back on the field. Probably concealing the true nature of his medical condition. And once Ratliff found this out....he is livid and has dug in his heels. This is PURELY my speculation

Favors? How about they do some reporting for once. Clearly there is a story here.

I could be way off on this, but i think Ratliff's fate with the team was decided well before this so-called conditioning test groin injury.

the story has been reported.

ratliff is mad the teams handling of his injury.
the team wants him rehabbing at valley ranch but he distrusts the team and wants to rehab elsewhere.
he isn't at VR so what exactly is there to report that hasn't?

you are speculating, which is all the media can do unless one side or the other wants to go on record and they clearly do not.

once agian you are changing the argument
here is what you said:

"Ratliff earned the money he is being paid now for his past play."

good teams never do business that way

regarding Geno atkins, you are saying things in support of your argument that are incorrect

Geno atkins is 25 right now
Rat was 30 in 2011 when he received his 48.6 millino dollar contract playing in a 3-4 scheme as a small NT where his body was constantly subject to abuse it could not handle

not even in the same ball park, try again

we made the same mistake with Rat that we tried to make repeatedly with Spencer but lucked out

jerry and stephen have no idea how to build a team
none

sounds like you are lock-step with him though

I am surprised the mods have not taken this thread down -- without any source this is pure rumor.
