My wife and I were dining at one of our regular spots last night--in the courtyard at Patrizio's--and sitting right next to us was Matt Stafford and family. He was wearing and Reds cap and just laughing and enjoying the night like everyone else. It struck me, here is this regular (but highly gifted) kid who just signed for 78 million and 41 million guaranteed and HE HAS NOT PLAYED ONE NFL DOWN!

Nothing at all against him or any of the rookies, but this seems to be a big problem with the NFL, imo. The NBA fixed this to some degree a few years ago. Does anyone know if this will be addressed in coming owner/union meetings? It seems that more money should go to the proven players, obviously.

I think they are going to start seriously discussing rookie salary caps at some point in the near future. And if they aren't going to, they frieken should.

Stafford isn't getting $41 million guaranteed. All he's guaranteed right now is $17.05 million. The rest he has to earn.

It's pretty complicated, but the gist is that he has to reach certain incentives in order to get a lot of that "guaranteed" money. For example, if he reaches certain incentives in 2009, he gets an additional $7.83 million in guranteed salary for 2011.

If you really care to read the gory details, I wrote about it here --

It's a top 3 priority that will be concentrated on in the next CBA negotiations.

thanks, that's pretty interesting. is that usually the case with large amounts of "guaranteed" money?

I was looking at his draft trades section on his blog.

This still makes me mad:

51 = 75, 110

In 2001, Buffalo had the 51st pick and traded down with Denver, dropping seven spots to No. 58 and adding the 110th pick. This year, Dallas had the same original pick (No. 51) but had to drop 24 spots to get the same additional pick (No. 110). Historically, this was 481 points for 352 points (249 plus 103).

hey at least he was hanging with his family at Patrizio's and not at Ruth's Chris or something.

Rookie salary cap will be a trading chip in the next contract bargaining, but I don't think the players or the management really likes it. The lions share of players don't care for untested rookies coming in and sucking up all the contract money.

New deal will probably address this seriously.

I'm interested in knowing how the veterans feel about the prospect of a rookie cap, etc. Anyone know what the consensus is among them? If any.

DFWJC : Patrizio's is the goods!

The nfl really does need to fix it. They have the cap backwards.

I think eventually we'll see them get capped because the contracts are getting out of control and thus it's also going to lead to vets contracts becoming more and more out of control.

For example lets say a guy like Stafford works out...can you imagine what his next deal is going to be given what he was given on his first deal?

Yikes.
