Per Schefter - Dallas restructured contract of DE DeMarcus Ware, converting $5 million of his base salary into signing bonus, saving $4 million against cap. Now that they've restructured DeMarcus Ware's contract, Cowboys plan to restructure contracts of about a dozen more players by March 12.

A dozen more? Doubt it'll be that many. Although it could be pushing it if we don't get Romo done before March 12.

Ware was an obvious one as we owe very little on the cap after this season on his deal (about 5.4 mill). We might push another 5 mill into the future on that but when money owed against the cap is less than the base salary, the contract is a pretty solid one.

Carr is next

Yep, Broaddus was talking about this the other day how Stephen has set up contracts where the team can "go get money" when they need to.

Fans panic while S. Jones yawns.

Part of the fan panic is the future cap implications of the moves that'll be made to accomodate 2013. It's well founded.

Most teams are trying to "push" $$$ to 2015 when the new TV money will be figured into the cap.

Team keeps coming up short, while Stephen jones keeps helping run the front office.

Fans frown.

No, they'll perform the same restructuring next season. Why is this so difficult to grasp?

Any team trying to pull off tricks like that should get hit with a cap penalty just like we did. There is no difference in doing that & front loading contracts in an uncapped year.

Nah, I used to think that too. But it turns out that we can keep pushing things into the future and do this little dance every year. Cap problems happen and this year is an example of some of the worst to expect.

Any team backloading/restructuring still has to take the cap hit at some time. There's no getting around it, they will ultimately take that cap hit.

Dallas front loaded the Austin deal to avoid taking a significant portion of the cap hit all together.

Pretty significant difference.

I was being sarcastic, the cap number should have went up this year as it was announced after the new CBA was announced 2 years ago. I'm just a little PO'd we got hit with a Cap Penalty when Chicago got to ride free with Peppers contract.

Thankfully the team drafted so poorly 4-5 years ago that they don't have to worry about keeping quality players.

Push this scenario into the future a year or two and we're talking Dez, Murray, Tyron, Lee, and Carter that all will have new deals either on the books or set to be on the books. If Harris develops, he's there too. Dan Bailey is there although kicker isn't a huge price, it's still a price for a good one.

Not to mention that saying "this is as bad as it gets" kind of ignores the entire state of the franchise. No OL, weak DL and the absolute need to restructure in order to operate without any guarantee there will be enough money readily available and without pushing the burden into the future to upgrade either line to a significant extent.

If this is as bad as it gets and deferring the problem down the line is the solution.....what exactly does that do for Dallas?

Stagnation, I guess.

The Peppers contract isn't really that far out line. It looked like it when the penalties came down but that's because the numbers reported were ridiculously off.
