There are a couple of others I would like to re-sign (Spears, Bowen, Hatcher, Hurd, Ball, ...).

All should be virtual locks to remain as restricted free agents.

Marcus Spears will be tendered at original entry (1st rd), Stephen Bowen will be tendered as a second rounder, Jason Hatcher original entry (3rd rd), Sam Hurd will be tendered as a second rounder again and Alan Ball would likely be given a second round tender instead of original entry (7th rd).

I wouldn't mind getting an ILB if a great everydown ILB with great cover skills became available. I'd also like a top notch safety to cover the elite TEs of the league.

I'd like to find a SILB in the draft who will hopefully team up with Jason Williams on the interior in the future. I'm also looking forward to getting Stephen Hodge back, he should be a natural dime 'backer in addition to a special teams head hunter.

It's hard to find a safety that can handle elite tight ends by himself, that requires a talent like Darren Woodson. I like how some defenses will use large corners for the job, we even had a package where Anthony Henry did that last year.

It might be wiser to look for a big, physical corner who might be a touch slow for man coverage on the outside.

No go.

The teams that make the divisional round of the playoffs and have restrictions placed on their player acquisition wouldn't have such an easy time playing the game.

Not only would they have to loose a free agent before they could sign one, the money involved would also have to match up.

They couldn't loose a player who signed for near the minimum and then turn around to sign an expensive tier one free agent.

They would have to loose a star and his salary in order to sign one.
I guess they put in more provisions than I thought.

I'm assuming a team can resign their own free agents (restricted and unrestricted).

I'd hate to see us lose a chance to sign Austin, Spears, etc.

The new NFL world: Indianapolis, San Diego, New Orleans and any team in the Final 8 cannot sign free agents unless they lose one.

This is no news. In fact it's know for about more than a year and i wonder why those media guys sell it as news.

Maybe because people don't care for the bigger picture unless they (their) teams is "hit" by them. New times same old story - people talk alot but know only little.

HEre is the part that is interesting:

Rule #3, Top 8 teams and Free Agency - The top 4 teams, ie/ the teams in the NFC/AFC championship games, can only sign FA's after they have lost one. They can resign players and sign players who are released, but players due for UFA can only be signed once one of their own UFA's sign somewhere else. The teams who lost in the divisional round, have the same thing, except they can sign some UFA's with salary restrictions, in other words, they won;t be able to sign the high priced UFA's.

Here is a report if you might wanna check out others rules too.

And here is a report from nfl.com about a year ago.

Absolutely!

That is the best part of the new system.

There is no limit of a team resigning its own players.

We would not lose anyone we weren't willing to.

One of the things I hated about the salary cap was that it didn't account for the unexpected.

Teams that draft well on day two or mine solid prospects from the undrafted ranks were often left in a lurch when the rent came due and they hadn't planned on needing big dollars for a long shot that panned out.

Teams who struck gold in the draft deserved a discount on the cap for developing talent the right way and wanting to keep their own.

That's a non-issue in the uncapped year.

If you found it, it's yours for as long as you want it.

I understand the NFL not wanting any team trying to copy the New York Yankees (not that it would guarantee anything) but I hope they do something to make it easier and advantageous for teams who build correctly with the draft.

Doesn't matter we won't have big holes to fill anyways....this team won't need to make a splash in FA.

I am ready to go to war next year with this team plus a new draft class.

Then sign players that are at the bottom of the roster to 1 years deals. Then when their contracts run out sign the good free agents..

There's a rule that affects that move as well. It's called the 30% rule.

Teams cannot sign FA's during the uncapped year for more than 30% above of what they made THIS season.

Is that only for the top 8 teams? Also are the top 8 teams just considered the division winners?

Not necessarily.

Once again, if there's an uncapped year, owners COULD use it to dump unwanted contracts. Those players don't count as " free agents ", even though they technically are.

As a matter of fact, if it happens that way, the talent pool of players that could be available because their contracts were dumped could be alot BETTER than those who's contract expired.

and the beauty of it all is that NO player is allowed to sign for more than 30% above of what they made THIS season.

As per Adam:

Because the NFL is in the final year of the salary cap, teams aren't able to structure contracts quite in the same way they typically do, with the first-year cap number being especially small. The 30 Percent Rule limits the annual increase in certain components of a player's cap number to 30 percent of those components in the Final Capped Year, starting in the first uncapped year. Because this is the Final Capped Year, this year's cap details are what determines how much a contract can increase each season after this. That limits how small this year's cap number can be when using the normal structure of a contract.

That rule is for every player in the league, regardless of who wants to sign him.

This uncapped season, imo, is looking more and more like a disaster from the players' prespective and a bonanza for owners, which, again, imo, I don't see it being extended beyond 2010. No way the players will go into 2011 with this rules. They, basically, eliminate free agency.
