Seahawks nab Pro Bowl linebacker Peterson

Adam Schefter
NFL Analyst

(March 20, 2006) -- One of the busiest teams of the offseason struck again when the Seattle Seahawks reached agreement with former San Francisco linebacker Julian Peterson on a blockbuster seven-year, $54 million deal.

The deal, which the Seahawks and agent Kevin Poston spent today finalizing, includes $18.5 million worth of guarantees, including $10 million this season.

A Seahawks official confirmed the agreement in principle with the linebacker the San Francisco 49ers designated their franchise player one year ago.

Even with Peterson's mega-contract, the Seahawks still have the wherewithal to match the $49 million offer sheet Pro Bowl guard Steve Hutcinson signed with the Vikings. The Seahawks had to announce their decision by tonight at midnight ET.

And they are not done there. Still in place is a contingent deal for defensive end John Abraham, whom the Seahawks have the exclusive negotiating rights for from the New York Jets in exchange for Seattle's first-round pick.

Already this offseason, the Seahawks have re-signed NFL MVP running back Shaun Alexander and defensive tackle Rocky Bernard.

But now, the Seahawks are bolstering their defensive line, landing Peterson tonight and former Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle Russell Davis over the weekend.

Peterson now is expected to start ahead of D.D. Lewis, and the Seahawks also could use him as a pass-rushing end. But the NFC champion Seahawks have options for the 28-year-old Peterson, whom the Miami Dolphins also pursued until he reached agreement with Seattle.

With Peterson off the market, former Washington Commanders linebacker LaVar Arrington now will be the most coveted defensive player available. His decision should come soon.

I'd liked to have gotten him but thats a lot of cash for someone with the particular injury he had. He's a big risk for that kind of dough.

Now you know why he isn't a Cowboy. The Seabags will be sorry for making this move.

I was disappointed, too, and then I saw the salary he got. Suddenly, that Achilles started scaring me when I saw that dough lol.

Seatte's getting serious, though, about returning to the Super Bowl. It'll be interesting to see if they match the Hutchinson deal and/or if they can land Abraham.

54 million with 18 million guaranteed on a player coming off an achilles injury???? Whoa !!!!! I can't believe anyone else in the league would have paid that.

Nice player, but no way do I mortgage that kind of cash for him

looks like they lose the best guard in the league.

no other move they make is going to fix that. they can sign all the LBs in the league it isn't going to take the sting away.

Boiman is a nice consolation prize anyhow.

In all seriousness, the guaranteed money in this deal is not something I'd like to have seen Jerry match.

Same with me....
If this deal would have happened 2 off seasons ago I would have little problems with the deal , but even though he was still a very good player last year he was not a top 3 OLB like before the injury

that is just crazy money for a guy who hasn't been dominant for a while. if he can get back to where he was great. you just see so many guys who are never the same after that type of injury. if that was what he wanted I have no problem with us passing.

WOW!!!!!! He got all that damn money. I don't think they can afford Brown now if we give him a good enough contract.

Seriously.

Seems like they are going for it this year. We need to nab Brown from them.

That would be a real blow to their chances.

I really wanted Peterson, but the money is extreme for a guy with that injury.

I really don't have much of an intest in Arrington though. He's got a .10 cent head.

If Peterson, coming off injury, commands this, I can only imagine what Arrington will command.
