Schottenheimer on Lamb and Pickens not starting the game

who knows. i'd imagine it was a shock to them though. but honestly, it doesn't necessarily have to strike fear in them. it sends a message to the entire roster. i don't see how anyone could be upset with this move.
im not upset. I just dont think it does anything.

I mostly agree. I think there has to be a better way to handle it than have two of your best players off the field on your opening possession.
That's probably the mindset - "the team needs me" - that allows them to flaunt the rules. Nah...you gotta be willing to risk something REAL to make the point to the rest of the team. Young coach can't afford mutiny...especially from guys who are expected to set the example.

They were in Vegas and missed curfew. I think No-Schott could have punished them differently. That first drive didn't do anything to change the mind-set of the team needs me.

I'm just saying there's different ways to punish than to hold out your best players for a drive. You are punishing the team by doing that.

No, they punished the team by being late. It's like your kid being out late and calling for a ride. Most of the time, I go pick them up. But if they abuse the privilege or on some BS, I might make them walk. The walk is a risk, but if the child knows you are going to cave...why change the behavior? And if the other kids are watching...

I think of it more like taking the car away from a kid whose late getting home and hurting everyone else who was counting on them for a ride. To me, you don't hurt the others to punish the one in the wrong. You tailor the punishment to only hurt the ones who did wrong.

Do you not understand being responsible to the team? The thinking is that THEY punished the team.

What applies to one must apply to all.

When Jimmy let his stars get away with a few things, they were winning.

Last I checked, 4-5-1 is not winning.

Jimmy benched Irvin for oversleeping and missing the plane to Detroit.

My goodness, it was a slap on the wrist to show they are not above their teammates. Schotty did exactly what he wanted to do: expose their poor judgment. He could have easily fined both, and we would not have heard a word about it. I'm sure some coaches would have handled it differently but the key IMO is holding them accountable to their teammates.

It’s not surprising I suppose to see people so determined to denigrate Schottenheimer that they criticize even the obviously good decisions, particularly ones that if it was *their* coach, they’d scrambling to the top of the barn to crow like a rooster.

Thanks for the clarification Schotty…..

Oh boy. He didn't publicly shame them; instead, he kept it in-house.

Lemme know how it goes the next time you get sat down at work for a day or so and your boss comes out and says "Robbie will not be here for the next few days because he set up a camera to watch people in the lady's room."

Do you think that you might like some discretion then?

And you think they played..... better then normal? Just another day at the office for both of them. Nothing new.
Pickens took over the game. They couldn’t tackle him. 144 yards and a TD is a great game I don’t care how good you are. 16 yards per reception. Lamb had less targets but was also just really efficient. Which tells me that they took their punishment well and responded in stride. Dak played his best game in a month by far and part of that was bc of his weapons playing really well.

Jimmy benched Michael Irvin for missing the plane. That’s what Troy was referencing in the broadcast when he said Jimmy did similar things when he was in charge.

Michael Irvin was benched for the
first series of a game after missing the team flight to Detroit in 1992.
Irvin missed the team flight because he overslept. As punishment, coach Jimmy Johnson held him out of the starting lineup for the team's first offensive series and fined him $1,000. Johnson stated that while Irvin was one of his favorite players and they had a great relationship, the matter was considered over after the disciplinary action was taken.
Jimmy may have benched one, but not two of his top receivers at the same time, he was smarter than that..............LOL!

its fake
sitting them for one series at the very start of the game MEANS NOTHING
Eh, the days of cutting guys is gone with the salary cap plus these guys are above getting cut over most anything that isn’t very serious. Being benched for a series is social pressure, which shouldn’t be underestimated in its effectiveness.

My wild guess is they went out partying together, one crashed at the other's place and they showed up late together to a meeting or practice, thinking it was no big deal because they're untouchable and Schotty wanted to make an example out of them.
