I'ill be surprised if Dallas gets more out of Weems than it did Parnell. Parnell was capable enough to start to get paid to do it by another team this year. Stable doesn't necessarily translate to being that good. Parnell had his bad moments, but his good moments were very good.

I'll be surprised as well, gimme six. I believe, however, Parnell's reputation/value was enhanced by the average fan's distrust of Free in comparison to three of the young 1st-round studs to his left.

Parnell had his bright spots but, IMO, he was pretty average the rest of the time and I am grateful Dallas did not try and retain his services. I believe Weems can be just as successful, in a limited role, as long as he remains healthy.

Not really. If Dallas preferred him over Free, they could have made it happen, just like they do with any player they want to keep.

He got starter money and Dallas didn't want to give him that since they had Free. So yes money. Plus they had Weems as the swing tackle.

I'm not so sure on that. It would be one thing if they loved Parnell and hated Free (as some do), but I think the fact is that both players have plusses and minuses and they realized that due to age, Free was going to come much cheaper.

The fact is that over the past two years, there have been several players they've let go rather than capping themselves out trying to keep everybody.

5. Byron Jones continues to practice like he has been in this league for five years. Not only does he have physical talent, but mental talent as well. In the red zone, he made a veteran play on a ball by jamming Terrence Williams on the line, realizing Williams was going nowhere and then adjusting his coverage by dropping back and making Brandon Weeden have to throw the ball over the top of him to Cole Beasley. Weeden was unable to get it there and the pass fell incomplete. Just a really nice heads up play by Jones.

im sure the line is going to be ok. Right now im not concerned about the talent on the line. Pollack was my concern but as many said here, we wont really see a bump from the change. I actually feel that they are right so i dont care whos gone now and whos being installed. Lets just find our water and rise up. Some good pieces on that line and at least 4 of them are looking to be better.

Once a guy gets the reputation of being a slacker then every battle he loses becomes "ahh look he's immature and unfocused or he would have won that battle" .... Then the fans turn on the guy, its not fair

Why didn't the Cowboys keep Parnell and let the older, less reliable player go?

Because the people who really know what they are doing - those who know about assignments and what a player needs to do on each play - didn't think as highly of him as his CBZ super fans?

Parnell was always inconsistent but I never saw it being a huge problem; more an enigma. Still had to create some trust issues.

Coaches hate inconsistent. You can't coach around inconsistent.

Broaddus dogged Weems last year at the start of TC before Weems got injured.

Bob Sturm just finished his series reviewing who was at fault for each sack during the 2014 regular season.

Parnell had 5 starts but was not at fault for any of the regular season sacks according to Sturm.

Free was responsible for more than anyone despite missing 5 games.

Let's be a little more contextualized with the #s here. Sturm gave Free 5.5 sacks. That 1.5 more than the left tackle who most would say is pretty good. PFF had him with 3 - tied with several others. These aren't bad #s.

Yes, Parnell had zero. But clearly the coaches who look at actual assignments and how players carry those through care far less about outcomes over a small sample than whether the guy did what he was supposed to

Yeah and not only that but you can't justify paying what you would have to pay Parnell. Free was the far cheaper option.

Nice reviews out of mini camps are fine but in reality you don't know what you have, especially on line guys till they put on pads and start hitting
I thought Parnell played solid last year in real games. It remains to be seen if Weems is on the level of Parnell but that's what camp and pre season games are for. We need him to be the swing tackle and I hope he can fill that role and push free out the door next year but he has a lot to prove. That's no knock on free but the key to sucess in the cap era is only having to give 2nd contracts to elite players. Ideally the good players you have a guy ready to replace at that point. Tough to do every time but that's got to be the goal

Put me in the camp that believes Parnell was severely overpaid. He's a good player, sure, but not a franchise tackle.

I still believe that Weems could end up off the roster.

His total contract was 32M. Tyron's contract was 110M. Free got 15M.

Oh no question.

The Jags overpaid because they can't develop enough decent offensive linemen.

The Cowboys were in the same boat not that long ago.
