Screeching/yelling baby!

My almost 6 months old son has started screeching/yelling at a very high pitch non stop for hours. It's like we have a little banshee for a son all of a sudden. He is not crying or needs anything in particular and he is often smiling when he does it.

We looked it up thinking there might be something wrong but everything we've read says that it is very common. At some point babies find that they can make noises and they're just attempting to vocalize or practice their new found skill.

It was very cute at first and it still is to some extent but the wife and I are starting to get headaches from these very high pitch screeching episodes. We realize there isn't much we can do about it and we just have to let it play out. Apparently it can last anywhere from a couple of weeks to a few months.

For those of you who have children or have had some experience with this particular issue, how do/did you cope? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

I've never noticed this from my two boys. I would take him to the doctors just to be safe.

Hopefully it's nothing.

My nephew is 8 mos and he does the same thing. It's not a medical thing as far as we know. He's just talking.

My sis thinks he got it from the day care. Scream and you'll get attn.

We just talk to him and tends to settle him down some.

Yikes.I'm not looking forward to this. Does it happen in the middle of the night?

I'm finding out that reading to him seems to help a little. My wife has tried playing some music and dancing around with him, it that seems to work as well for short spells.

So far no. But i've read that other people have had to deal with it at 6am, as soon as their baby wakes up. Thank god we haven't had to deal with it that early.

Our daughter use to have bad dreams and wake up screaming and crying in the middle of the night.

She's let out a scream and I'd be running at full speed to her room and find that there's nothing wrong per se, just very upset.

That was very disconcerting and I'm glad that hasn't happened in awhile.

Ethio, I think you just have to block his noise with noise of your own. Talk to him in a normal voice. He'll gradually lower his tone as he figures out that he can talk (as babies do in their own, little way) without screaming.

Just curious what age your daughter is, Faerluna? I have a 3 year old and we have been lucky so far with respect to nightmares. But I have heard from so many other parents that their kids have nightmares and/or night terrors and I just want to get an idea of the age when other kids wake up screaming?

Thanks Bob. We're trying to do that as well and that does help at times. We just have to wait this out but omg the boy can scream so loud and at such a high pitch our cats come running with their ears pinned back thinking there is a cat fight going on. :laugh1:

She just turned 3 and she was having them in the 24-30 months area. It's been at least 6 months since her last one, thankfully!

I'm really glad for you that it hasn't happened in a while and hopefully it won't happen again. That would scare the the hell out me and probably won't be able to go back to sleep after waking up like that. My son screamed at the top of his lungs in the middle of the night once when he was 2 or 3 months old and my wife and I tripped over each other trying to get to him. It turned out he was having a really bad case of gas:D

Trust me Ben, good times are ahead. But I would get your sleep in now, if I were you!

He is just getting ready to to cheer the Cowboys on in 2010. ;)

Is he teething? Does it happen after his bottle or nursing? Try burping him to be safe.

If he cheers like this i would need to be satisfied with watching the game without sound. Either because he's still screaming like a banshee or I have gone deaf by then:D

Joe, yes he is teething. We thought about that but according to what we've read, it happens at various stages. Some say that their 13 months old does it. As far as burping goes, we burp him often and he is a machine at both ends:) . No problem there.

Our daughter had bad gas, too. We started giving her the gas drops when she ate. Not only did that resolve her gas, but she takes Childrens Tylenol without issue now. Hooray! :D

Did you use Mylicon? That stuff is far too expensive for the amount you get but its a lifesaver. We also started using Gripe water as of late and it seems to work really well.
