football NFC Championship game against the Green Bay Packers Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015, in Seattle.

The Seahawks have offered quarterback Russell Wilson a contract offer worth $21 million per year, according to Pro Football Talk.

Wilson is entering the final year of his rookie contract, which would pay him $1.54 million this season. With his new deal, the 2012 third-round pick from Wisconsin would be the NFL's third-highest paid quarterback behind Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers ($22 million per season) and Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger ($21.85 million).

The Seahawks want to get a new deal in place before the team opens training camp on Thursday. Wilson has said he would play out the final year of his contract and has yet to agree to Seattle's latest offer.

If the two sides cannot come to an agreement, Seattle does have the option of placing a franchise tag on Wilson next year, which would pay the quarterback who helped Seattle reach the last two Super Bowls more than $20 million for one season.

Good for him.
That's basically the going rate, so it wouldn't surprise me.

Wilson is one of the most fascinating story lines in the NFL to me. I'm not sold on him being anywhere near the top tier but yet there are those SB's under his belt and he is young with room to grow. Paying him top dollar on a long term would be a very difficult call for me at this point. Kinda like buying an expensive sports car on the internet with only pictures to judge by.

I don't believe Wilson is a top tier QB yet but I don't think he's anywhere near a bus driver. I remember not thinking much of Brady early in his career. He was a solid QB but I never imagined him being in the same category as Peyton. I can see Wilson elevating into top tier status one day.

Success and the cap are now battles the Seahawks will have to face along with being the hunted instead of the hunter. All that stuff starts to add up and eat away at the team's chances. Earl Thomas got paid. Same with Sherman. Lynch is not cheap. Throw in Jimmy Graham's salary. And then top all those off with Wilson's $20M+ per year hit. LB Bobby Wagner wants paid. DL Bennett wants paid more. Okung will break the bank on his next contract. It gets a lot harder to fit the pieces in the cap puzzle. Need to get creative with the cap. Get too cute and it can hurt for a while. And it doesn't help drafting near the end.

They need to pay him for the next 4-5 years to stay at the top.

He's going to get it from someone and what are their other options.

Just give him his 5/100m and suck it up.

Although he isn't a world beater, he has a lot of the intangibles that you look for in your field general. He is cool and calm under pressure. He isn't afraid of the spotlight. He isn't afraid to have the ball in his hands with the game on the line. He is confident without being alienatingly cocky. He is humble. He is strong in his faith. He accepts his faults and failures, without pointing fingers. Also, he simply wins games, and does so with a lackluster group of WRs and TEs. He is a duel threat as a runner and a passer, and seems to understand when to use either weapon.

I have seen him make "top tier" throws with game on the line... Or simply in the clutch.

Yes. Intangibles are are just as important as world beater stats.

Russell Wilson has set a deadline for later this week to work out a long-term contract with the Seattle Seahawks, and now we have more evidence that Wilson is seeking to become the highest-paid player in the NFL.
Wilson has turned down an offer worth "nearly $21 million per year," according to what Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk has heard through the grapevine. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network appeared to confirm the nature of the offer when he called Florio's number "essentially accurate."
In the NFL, only four players have a contract with an average annual value greater than $20.5 million:
  • Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers — $22.0 million (five years, $110 million)
  • Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers — $21.85 million (four years, $87.4 million)
  • Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers — $20.76 million (five years, $103.8 million)
  • Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons — $20.75 million (five years, $103.75 million)
Presumably, the Seahawks' most recent offer to Wilson falls somewhere in the neighborhood of Newton and Ryan, but almost certainly in the top five ahead of Joe Flacco, whose deal has an average annual value of $20.1 million.

I think Wilson is a very good QB, I don't think he is however elite. I think in games where teams have been able to contain Wilson in the pocket and stop the running game of the seahawks he has not been able to make the throws to get teams to back off the line of scrimmage. His greatest asset is he makes few mistakes and his very good on the move but when forced to stay in the pocket his effectiveness is not close to what is expected from elite QB's

SEA has him for 1.5m this year, franchise at 20m next year and franchise again for 24m in 2017.

Thats 3/45m

If they tack on 3 years at 20m per thats 6/105m. Guarantee the first 50m and give him a 20m signing bonus.

Done.
