Seahawks sign two to help beleaguered secondary
By José Miguel Romero
Seattle Times staff reporter
KIRKLAND *— The Seahawks signed safety John Howell and cornerback Pete Hunter today, placing cornerbacks Kelly Herndon and Jimmy Williams on injured reserve.
Howell, a Seahawk in 2005, and Hunter, a former Dallas Cowboy, replace Herndon and Williams on the 53-man active roster.
Howell played in 10 games last season before going on injured reserve near the end of the regular season. He was mainly a special-teams contributor.
Hunter was the Cowboys' fifth-round draft pick in 2002 and played three seasons with Dallas before being traded to the New York Jets. He played in four games for the Cleveland Browns last season and has five starts in 34 career games, with three interceptions and 17 special-teams tackles.
Howell and Hunter figure to contribute immediately on special teams, with Hunter perhaps to be used as an extra defensive back in passing situations. Neither player was on a team this season.
