I think you're probably right. I hope to see what Beriault can do this year without the injury, so I hope he sticks. I have really high hopes for Watkins, if the coaches use him correctly. He needs to play "centerfield", not put in a lot of man coverage.

I agree with you fully. When you put Watkins in that Centerfield, it allows Roy Williams to be in the box more, and it causes more pressure on the Quarterback to throw a interception, fumble, or take the sack for a loss.

I think Coleman may really come in handy with some 1 on 1 stuff, and I'm also looking forward to TC to see what Watkins can do when the pads are on.

I think the FS situation probable turns out like you've posted--at least for this year--but Davis better have improved his coverage abilities not just beat out the competition cause we've got nothing better behind him. However, I'm hoping Watkins provides some real competition & develops this year so that next year, with addition of offseason weight conditioning program, he beats out all competition to start at FS.

Our starting CBs are set and a good tandem but disagree with Reeves as our #5 CB. He was really coming on in 2nd half of season after Henry's injury essentially sidelined him for end of season. A.Glenn played well for us last year but he turns 34 on 7/16/06 (last year of 2 yr deal) & Marco Coleman
(32) signed an inexpensive 1 year deal. Realize both are seasoned pros and (at least Glenn was a pro bowler at one time?) but I don't want Reeves development stunted by dropping him to #5 which essentially means he only gets ST play. I'll wait to see what kind of contribution Coleman can make (at both FS & CB) before giving him a roster spot.

BTW: I see Williams and Parker going to the PS. Also you didn't list Pile & UDFA CB Brooks. Well be interesting to see what Brooks has; he might also be a candidate for the PS but doubt Pile can stick unless he really progressed in offseason.

u named like 12 guys... 2 of those guys are bound to get hurt so pending on what 2 get hurt the Cowboys should keep the best 8 or 9 guys!!!

the key will be can Coleman cover? if he can cover then he will save BILL a roster spot that he will probally use on his front 7!!! If Coleman is just a FS... then Bill will be looking for 1 of the young guys to it up and send Coleman on his way!!!

If the Cowboys keep Coleman as you indicated, they'll only keep one back-up safety behind Williams and Davis, I bet.

Who is Brooks? anyone?

Brooks is Darrell Brooks. He's a safety.

The cornerback Sago1 was thinking of is either Quincy Butler or Byron Parker.

Does anyone see the situation at safety in HDC's senario, having an effect of freeing up a roster spot for a kickoff specialist for Vanderjagt?
If we only keep 3 safeties and use Coleman as another backup at safety then that would free up a roster spot.
I know Parcells will be looking for a way to justify having another specialist on the team besides the deep snapper.

just call it a gut feeling, this is the 2nd time the Cowboys are bringing him back, if he shows something, which I think he will, he stays, and they decide to let Coleman go, Jacque will be the 4th CB/nickel S, and Watkins or Davis will be the backup FS, my money is on Davis winning the starting job in TC, so I don't see any real purpose for keeping Coleman around, insurance? ok, but Parcells likes to go w/ younger guys to fill those roles

I put mine in bold, its the same as yours. one thing about this DB field, is flexibility. Coleman can plan CB or FS position and play some SS. a lot of the players are interchangable. which is great, since it gives offenses match up difficulties. COleman is not great cover corner any more, but he can still cover the slot guy if need be specially for a zone type defense. he can also drop back into coverage and play FS. Davis is going to be better naturally since he was making progress towards the end of the year but he is better as a SS than a FS. in our defense safties are interchangable. I like watkins to get some action in nikle and dime defenses where his range can make it difficult to pass. I predict he will have 3 Int's.

I also like bariualt, he can hit and with him and williams they will lay the wood on a couple of players and make it difficult to roam the middle.

this is going to be a really fun defense to watch jelling over the season. its young. its deep. its versatile. they will make mistakes, that's part of youth, but once they start to get it and once they start to come together, they will be the "scary bunch"
