I'm not but he's a young guy. I like his potential but he's not there yet.

Yea, still has some bad habits, like grabbing here and there. Still needs some polishing, but he does actually have some football awareness in terms of going for a possible INT.

In my opinion still the best corner we have excluding any of the rookies.

I agree. Too early to say compared to Lewis(3 games) or Awuzie

People complaining about Jones I think don't really understand safety play.

I think people are just waiting for him to become a center-field, playmaker type but he hasn't shown an ability to do that. Correct me if I'm wrong, but other than a hail-mary INT, he's still without one.

Deflects a lot of passes, but leaves a lot on the table.

Deflects a lot of passes when he's locked up usually in man coverage against a TE.

Amazing slot cover guy. Average free safety

Byron Jones is not instinctive enough to be playing FS, he reacts and don't anticipate.

I agree. I look at Brown and I don't see him overmatched physically. He's a step behind.....I credit it to his youth.

LOL. Geezus.

Well if you want to judge a guy based on interceptions? It's silly. Sure...Byron is nowhere near Earls caliber....but if your only defense is "he doesn't get interceptions"? There's much more to playing safety then that. But that's what you guys do....you determine how good. Defensive end is by sacks....how good a corner is by interceptions.

We really need to stop doing this dumb analysis where we look for a star player with similar stats as our underperforming guy and trying to make some analogy. Nevermind that Thomas has shown himself to be a ballhawk through his career and Jones has never done that. Also, let's note that he didn't just say interceptions, he also said Jones looks lost in coverage and rarely makes a play on the ball at FS.

You said it yourself........... Jones is not near Earl's caliber. So why even mention him in some bizarre comparison of interceptions through four games?

Maybe "people" were hoping for more than .5 interceptions per season, .5 forced fumbles per season, 0 fumble recoveries per season.

Maybe "people" hoped for more than 'competent' when the team spent a 1st round pick on a DB.
A late round defensive back prospect who has been moved around and who has spent his entire career on below average defenses with below average talent around him.

Jones is more parat of the solution on our defensive woes than a cause of it. And yet all I hear about Jones is how he is a jag. Sure I wish he was a Jalen Ramsey...but he's not. But end of 1st round his play has been good. Also maybe the lesson to be learned by our fanbase from Lawrence is perhaps we should give guys a full rookie contract before we throw out the baby with the bathwater? These kids aren't finished products.

His play has been good when he essentially acts as a CB.

Which is why I think they should move him back.

This offseason was a start. Shedding all of our VERY average vets needed to be done. However, this remains one of the worst secondaries in football and much more Work is needed. This is what I would do next offseason.

CUT:
Carroll. Nothing more needs to be said here
OSCan. If not for Dez he would be the most overrated player on this roster. Just go back and watch Kuiper abuse him all game long.
Frazier. Dude should be pumping gas. Has no business getting NFL snaps.

MOVES:
Jones. Move from safety to corner. He just doesn’t have the instincts to play deep
Awuzie. Move from corner to safety
Heath. To the bench
Woods. Into the starting lineup

I would also look to bring in fairly high priced free agent and spend another top three pick in the secondary

Why wait the offseason when you can do it NOW! Especially the last 2.

Right now, I would be happy if they bench Heath, start Woods.
Start Awuzie over Carroll and just live with it, can't be any worse.

I really expected more from Carroll. I was wrong.
MR CAT...I like your reasoning

Cut Scandrick but not Heath? No mention of Lewis? Hard to take this thread serious.

Heath doesn’t have a bloated contract and is a core ST guy. OSCan is paid like a star and is a scrub and doesn’t play teams. Pretty simple logic. And why mention Lewis. He is fine
