Ive been at several forums and blog spots and many peaople seem to think that our weakness is the O-line (I would agree) and the seconday. To me the secondary is our strong suit, except for FS but hopefully Coleman or Watkins can be ,at worst, avg. back there. I would just like to know what you think about the opinion that one of our weaknesses is our secondary.
They think that the secondary is the weak spot because they started off the year with allowing those late, big receptions in the first few games. That's all you see in the highlights of games. Stats tell a completely different story. They were 2nd in completion % allowed and 9th in QB rating allowed. That's despite have an average pass rush (15th in total sacks and 12th in adjusted sack rate).
Newman didn't get anything thrown his way (only about 4 attempts thrown his way per game) and thus didn't have much of a chance to get a lot of INT's. He still shut everybody down and was exactly what you want out of a CB, but people look at INT's first.
Henry got off to a great start. If he would've stayed healthy I believe he wouldn't have had the year Newman did, but he'd get more pub since he would've most likely had around 6-8 INT's.
Glenn was thought to be the guy who got burned all of the time, but the only guy that burned him was Santana Moss and well, he burned just about every CB last year.
People really just don't know about Reeves who was excellent. I really believe that despite playing the last half of the season, most non-Cowboys fan still thought Henry was playing instead.
Roy is a guy that other fans seem to revel in criticizing. He's really pretty solid in coverage. He doesn't have Ed Reed's range, but then again not many safeties do.
Davis sucks. I'll give them that.
In reality, the secondary is the strongest part of the team. They are excellent with Newman being as good, if not the best in the league last year. They have depth with both Newman, Henry, and Roy hitting their primes with Glenn as the veteran and Reeves as the guy that will be entering his prime pretty soon.
Even with Davis being a liability, they were good enough to be very effective with him at safety. And if Watkins could be an average free safety, I don't think there'd be a better secondary out there. If Watkins comes close to living up to his potential, this secondary would be worlds better than most people realize.
