Ive been at several forums and blog spots and many peaople seem to think that our weakness is the O-line (I would agree) and the seconday. To me the secondary is our strong suit, except for FS but hopefully Coleman or Watkins can be ,at worst, avg. back there. I would just like to know what you think about the opinion that one of our weaknesses is our secondary.

The only problem with the secondary last year is that players were getting caught out of position, and that had a lot to do with the safeties making bad reads.

Our CB's are very good. And we have good athletes at the safety position, but knowing the coverages and the reads and having the instincts to be in the right place to make a play is another story. That is why i think coleman makes the team, just for this year.

People have forgotten everything but the last 5 minutes of the 1st skins game apparently.

there were a lot of big plays against our secondary besides that skins game.

I may be wrong but the only other two I remeber were Anthony Henry just getting beat in man on man coverage on an all out blitz vs. Anquan Boldin, and the cover 2 misplay by Kieth Davis in the Chiefs game. I just dont remember being beat with the big pass play all that often.

I consider the seconday a strenght of the Cowboys other than FS the last few season and hopefully that has been addressed with Coleman and Watkins. Having 2 very good CB in Newman and Henry along with Glenn add to that a big hitting SS I like what I see in the Dallas secondary.

The pass to Moss when Tnew ran him down

first game against the giants, they were passing the ball all over us in the 4th quarter. If Roy didnt cause that goal line fumble we would have lost.

early in the raiders game.

i'm sure there were others but i dont have time to get into specific plays right now. anyway, an upgrade at FS would sure make a difference this year.

Realistically, our Secondary should be better this year from working together and more experience or better personel at the FS slot.

i am concerned about our 5th corner positon. I would like to see someone beat out nate jones. I wouln't mind us bring tony beckam (free agent from Titans) in to camp to compete at corner.

We held Washington to 14 stupid points in that game. Blame Jose Cortez for missing a 41 yard field goal in windless conditions-- no, blame Bill Parcells and Jerry Jones for relying on Billy Cundiff.

The secondary has two excellent cornerbacks and a premier safety. Last year was Davis' first year starting so he'll be improved and Coleman is an upgrade over Pile. Watkins represents the future at the position so I think we are good overall.

Lastly we upgraded the front seven like nobody's business. Another year in the system for Canty, Spears, and Raitliff; Ware adding moves; Carpenter; Ayodele; moving Greg Ellis around; and likely both Hatcher and Stanley making he team and providing major depth. That means more sacks and more pressure on the QB and more stuffed runs creating more 3rd and longs.

I see nothing but improvement for our secondary, unless someone gets hurt of course.

It's amazing what a better pass rush does for your secondary. I expect this unit to be one of the best in the NFL this year.

My concern in the secondary is the development of a legit FS (probably Coleman and maybe later in the season Watkins) and a 3rd CB who will succeed/replace Aaron Glenn (in last year of 2 year contract) . Reeves stepped up and played pretty well late in the season but neither Glenn or Reeves are Henry, but I guess Reeves could play Glenn's position in the nickle. Haven't seen Nate Jones play but as our #5 CB he's probably only seen the field as a ST but this is his 3rd year so he has to show something in TC for us to keep him.

getting caught out of position, or making incorrect reads does happen -- in any secondary.

seems to me that a much bigger problem last season (or at least as big) was injuries.

The injury to Henry was huge IMO

If he's healthy this season, along with TNEW and Glenn gives us one of the best CB line-ups in the league. If we can only get something from Coleman, Pile, and Davis at FS - this allow RW to play his game.

Our secondary does not concern me near as much as the OL / QB situation (should Bledsoe get hurt).

We have a good secondary. If our DL develops as we all like, the secondary will look great and we'll rank in the top 5 in pass defense. Pressure up front makes everyone on D look good.

Your right i forgot about the Moss catch and the first Giant game but i thought our secondary was good except for those few occasions, we just need a decent FS to play some center field.

Agree with the pass rush post and throw in the fact that our wr can actually run something besides a down and out, we'll score more and then theres the fact that we have a real kicker rather than a retread, LV says 5to1 to win SB, believe it...

They think that the secondary is the weak spot because they started off the year with allowing those late, big receptions in the first few games. That's all you see in the highlights of games. Stats tell a completely different story. They were 2nd in completion % allowed and 9th in QB rating allowed. That's despite have an average pass rush (15th in total sacks and 12th in adjusted sack rate).

Newman didn't get anything thrown his way (only about 4 attempts thrown his way per game) and thus didn't have much of a chance to get a lot of INT's. He still shut everybody down and was exactly what you want out of a CB, but people look at INT's first.

Henry got off to a great start. If he would've stayed healthy I believe he wouldn't have had the year Newman did, but he'd get more pub since he would've most likely had around 6-8 INT's.

Glenn was thought to be the guy who got burned all of the time, but the only guy that burned him was Santana Moss and well, he burned just about every CB last year.

People really just don't know about Reeves who was excellent. I really believe that despite playing the last half of the season, most non-Cowboys fan still thought Henry was playing instead.

Roy is a guy that other fans seem to revel in criticizing. He's really pretty solid in coverage. He doesn't have Ed Reed's range, but then again not many safeties do.

Davis sucks. I'll give them that.

In reality, the secondary is the strongest part of the team. They are excellent with Newman being as good, if not the best in the league last year. They have depth with both Newman, Henry, and Roy hitting their primes with Glenn as the veteran and Reeves as the guy that will be entering his prime pretty soon.

Even with Davis being a liability, they were good enough to be very effective with him at safety. And if Watkins could be an average free safety, I don't think there'd be a better secondary out there. If Watkins comes close to living up to his potential, this secondary would be worlds better than most people realize.

there were a handful of plays. Probably less than just about any team in the league.
