Ok Zoners, this has always bugged me, the way i understand it, when you make your cuts, you cant pick up any players till 24 hours after you cut down to 53 players.

The Cowboys always seem to wait till the last minute to make cuts, then they cant get the good players if any are cut earlier. So, should the cowboys cut now before the other teams do, then when teams cut down, the cowboys can possibly pick up a good player or two.

Or even add a good player on the practice squad, instead of waiting the last minute, then you have to wait the full 24 hours, while other teams are snapping up the good players?

Cowboys cut 5 players from their roster the day before they required to do so earlier this week. Maybe they will do so again this time around.

OTOH, we really don't know why they wait until last minute but can't rule out the possibility they hoping to get a pick for one of the players before we cut them. It entirely possible up to 3 of our younger players could each bring us a 7th rounder--particularly at the CB position, etc. We could also be talking to other teams about players they plan on cutting but who we might be interested in.

They all have to go through waivers first anyway if they are a young guy and we are what ,28th on the list. If we want somebody all we have to do is cut someone.

Dear fellow poster:

The Cowboys deciding on the cuts at the last moment could be a ploy by the Cowboys re players they want to slip thru waivers/cuts and then re-sign them.

In all the last-minutes cuts by teams, players the Cowboys want to stow away might be less evident. That might be Jerra's thinking, as naive as that might seem.

Just a thought.

That's not how it works.

Players are on the waiver wire for 24 hours. Any team can put in a claim for them, no matter how many players are on their roster or when they cut down to 53 (or any other number). After the 24 hours, the team highest in the claiming order who put in a claim is awarded that player, and they then must make room for that player on their roster.

For players not subject to waivers, they can sign with any team at any time.

There is NO disadvantage to waiting to make cuts, in terms of being able to pick up other players. The only timing issue is when you want to expose your own players who you want to sneak onto the practice squad.

I wonder if we will be able to pick up a draft pick (or two) for any of our potential cuts at LB and CB?

Adam - ?'s for you.

Once you receive a player that you made a claim for, do you go to the end of the waiver order or how does that work?

How is the waiver order set?

I thought the waiver order was set based on last years record...in other words, the worst teams get first choice... So this would put Dallas near the bottom of the list.

I think we are waiting because we have been trying to deal a guy or two for draft picks or to shore up some positions where we are dinged up (WR, LB, Oline - well not so much now that we got the big boy from Denver).

I think the Cowboys know they have a few guys at bottom of roster that might be eagerly awaited by a few teams and are trying to grab some late round picks.

The idea is probably to hope that teams that are looking over the waiver wire will fall in love with a player from another team before their cuts are listed so they may be passed up and on to the practice squad.
