Serious, non-agenda driven question about our young players...

Let me begin by saying that I am no longer a believer in Bill Parcells.

I will also say that aside from Landy and Jimmy Johnson, Parcells has always been one of my favorite coaches. I have watched him closely in NY.

I was pretty psyched when we hired him.

Here's my question...

Why does it seem to me that the play of our young guys gets worse with time??

Examples:

I don't think Roy Williams is anywhere near the playmaker he was in his rookie season (before Parcells) He was a human highlight reel back then.

Julius is NOT the player he was last year. He is clearly more tentative and I don't think the ankle is to blame...he wasn't the same guy before he hurt the ankle.

Henson...he was MUCH worse in his second season under Parcells than he was in his first. In fact, in the exhibition season, he looked LOST...the team tried to alter his throwing motion, etc...

Ware was actually better in the early part of the season, or certainly more of an impact guy than he is now.

Head case or not, I really thought Antonio Bryant was going to emerge. We all know what happened there.

I'll give ya my theory...Parcells bullies, intimidates and stresses "DON'T MAKE A MISTAKE" SO much, that it seems to me he sucks the intuitive energy out of young players.

If I think back to the Giant game a few weeks ago...they came out FIRED UP...The Commanders today? FIRED UP.

We came out in both of those games looking like a team that simply didn't want to make any mistakes.

I also think that Parcells reliance on and favoritism of "his" guys...and old timers is demoralizing for a young guy. While any coach would feel more comfortable with a vet, what matters is the degree. Take a look at last year's roster and you'll realize that Parcells is way outta whack with his reliance on vets...in fact, it almost looks like he has disgust for the young guys.

Finally, he is joyless. He always talks about how he hates the job...he RARELY smiles...He's always got something negative to say about the young guys...always...and that can't be a great motivator.
...you'll rarely see him compliment a player...He's a friggin dark cloud and that can't motivate a kid.

OK...gimme your thoughts...if you please. :D

I think he instructs the 'instincts' out of the player by punishing 'reaction' and freelancing.

The last time Ware got a sack, Nick and Jessica were still in love.

Good point, Juke.

Remember how psyched everyone was about our 2002 draft before BP came here. The one that produced standouts such as RoyW, Derek Ross, Antonio Bryant, A Gurode, P Hunter and T Walter. Say what you want about how they have turned out now but all of them played well as rookies. I would say the level of play of that entire group really dropped as soon as BP took over the helm. It was something that alarmed me then a great deal.

Now a few players do seem to have developed and gotten better over time - Witten, Crayton, B James but this should really be happening with every young player on the roster.

I think the crux of the matter is that BP has failed to develop a good coaching staff and that is why player development has not been where it should be.

2days player's are alot smarter, you cant motivate a player with fear, they will just shut down from fear of making a mistakes

Great post, I agree with most of it.

One would expect that the youngsters would play better as the season progressed. Not our youngsters, they are playing worse. And out Veterans are even worse. It seems that our veteran leadership has gone out the window.

Parcells is ultmately responsible for the debacle today. Our entire team is playing tentativley, afraid of making mistakes I suppose. The defense is not playing aggresively like they did in the early part of the season, and our O-line play is horrid. Losing Adams was a blow, but come on, it's not the bail out excuse everyone is making it to be. Yesteday the Giants started 3 O-Lineman out of position, and they just pounded the crap out of the Chiefs. Our O-Line has been together for most of the season and they are getting worse.

Phillip Daniels, gets 4 sacks..................who the heck is Phillip Daniels?

Juke. I think the problem with our players on defense is Mike Zimmer. No matter who is brought in and how talented they are they always end up being just average with Zimmer as DC.

On offense yeah I will go with you on pointing a finger at Parcells. He wanted JJ to get bigger. He might have completely ruined Drew Henson with the way he has fd with him.

Parcells does deserve some blame but I still have faith in him. Nuff faith I want him back next year to see what he can do to fix our OL problem.

The bottom line is:
If you are at the top of your division with playoff hopes and go into a meaningful game in December against a losing team and get beat (make that BEATEN) as badly as Dallas did today......if you can't get your team up for a game like this with all the implications against a bad team......it's time to hang em up.

I always thought BP might have been the best coach I've seen because he built teams up (NE,NYJ) from the bottom. But he never took them to the next level, and he hasn't proven he can do that here either. Yes we are better than the bottom just like his other projects, but we've hit the ceiling. Time to let a Belichick come in and make us champs again.

He has essentailly sucked the will of players to love this game....they grew up loving it and now that they see it is a business. It doesn't help that they have a guy who admits to sometimes being more frustrated after a WIN than a LOSS in the first place.

I like fiery coaches.....fiery coaches on the sidelines, etc. But he seems to be fiery behind the scenes, evidently.

He gets the players so scared to mess up that they now have no instincts whatsoever....if that were possible.

He either gets so much respect from the players that he destroys their instincts.....or the players have given up on him.....or BP has given up on the team.

While I'll admit that I've had similar thoughts about Parcells squashing intuitive play, I tend to discount it, believing it to be frustration on my part. As far as Parcells not being able to motivate the young guys, I think we only have to look at all of the players that want to come back and play for him. All of those vets were young once too.

How soon we forget, Dallas did hae 495 yards on KC last week. So, i think it more because how much KC defense suck then any indication of the play of the offence.

Why is it that you still have "Village Idiot" there, when the defense hasn't been our problem virtually all year long.

Perhaps it's time to change it to someone who has something to do with our offense?!?!?!?!

Look at when they were young.....it was a different NFL back then.....is it not possible that BP was a better coach back then? Even BP admits that he has changed a bit from the last time he coached.

you never did, so i stopped reading here. you might have been glad campo was gone but you've been *****in & moanin since day 1 about tuna.

I'll give you the obvious fact we need a better kicker but that is no great revelation either.

If you were going to stop there, you shouldn't have clicked on the thread in the first place.

Try arguing the points instead of making a statement.

I have it there cuz it is true. Our D started off good but now everyone if figuring it out. 501 yards given up to KC last week 35 points given up this week and all kindsa big plays. The Commanders coulda easily run up the score instead of run out the clock.

We spent big money in FA on DL and defense. We drafted 2 very talented defensive players in the 1st round of this draft and yet none of them are getting better. They are either just average or getting worse.

We got ZERO QB sacks.....ZERO QB pressures....ZERO Knockdowns today. Our pass rush is just as big a joke as last year.

Just the same weak bend dont break defense and wasting away talent on our defenes.

Zimmer sucks.

I copletely agree with you Juke, I would like to add some things.

How does a team come out that badly prepared?

Call me crazy but I acctually like Campo's 3 years here than Parcells's.
I mean we were young, seemed to play with fire, and we had a blast when we won. I really enjoyed watching raw young talent even if they weren't all that good, they played with heart. Hutch, Ross, Roy, and Bryant to name a few, and it felt we could go somewhere in a couple of years. I just don't have that feeling anymore.

To quote a line from The Replacements. "got to have miles and miles of heart"

Have you ever been stuck in the mud? Your going good, you get to a stop and you get stuck, being frustrated you spin the wheels fast and they develop holes, then when it feels you are about to get out you fall back in.

Probably a lame metaphor but thats what this team feels like

Maybe Ware isnt playing as good becasue other teams are doubling him....Spears is playing better....Burnett is playing better...Barber is playing better..Ted Johnson was acually active today...Canty is still the sme old over acheiving person he has been since day 1...I dont really understand your point Juke....Im not bashing but I think you are writing with your emotion more than fact

I know I'm close to thinking Bill should leave after this year. Today's loss was execusable. That was one of the most pathetic efforts I've ever seen out of a Cowboys' team.

How any player or coach could claim a check after this debacle is unbelievable...
