I posted a question for the offensive players. Now I want to know who you all think is the most valuable on defense. Who can we build around. With all of the suspensions and injuries, I want to see if I can exclude the following:

  • Rookies
  • Players that have been injured for more than 4 games in multiple years
  • Players that have been suspended for drugs or PEDS, etc.
I am leaning towards Byron Jones because of his attitude, and ability to play multiple positions in the secondary. I'd prefer it to be a player on the DL, but most of them don't qualify.

Just my opinion, what's yours?

Don't think we have one yet.

Byron is young and could be that guy, but he is very inexperienced. Its just too early to say its him, he doesn't even have an interception yet. Lee has been so fragile, its hard to name him. Crawford had 0 sacks last year, enough said.

Our D has a long way to go before we can name an MVP, noone has really earned that title yet unless you want to name Lee when he's on the field.

it's scary when you think about the defense and how it's built. I tend to agree. I picked Byron because he just seemed the best candidate under the conditions I put forth.

Yeah I just think one of them has to earn it. Right now none of them have earned such a title.

Tough call between Lawrence, Jones, Thornton, and Crawford

I guess the hope is that someday it's Jaylon Smith or Gregory. Huge if.

No one. We hope a player emerges but as of right now I say no one. Sean Lee is the only player on the field I would even have on my defense and I would have to carry 4 starting caliber LB's just to have him.

Crawford is the most overrated player on the Dline. Jones might prove to be something as could Dlaw or Thornton but as of right now we are a defense full of below average players.

Randy Gregory despite the desire to exclude him due to his suspension he plays the most important position on defense...RDE. IF he plays like the top 10 talent he has the talent to be and IF he stays clean this defense will have a perennial Pro Bowler that gets double digit sacks.

I think the question was more about who that player is vs what we would dream him to be.

I agree that if dreams come true, you would want a dominant pass rusher. It's be pretty sweet if it happened to be Gregory someday.

As you said in your initial post this thread it is a big "IF". Outside of him I have no one else. Byron Jones? Unless he is Ed Reed or Troy P I find it hard to see him being the heart and soul of the D or the MVP. Jaylon Smith as the Boys Ray Lewis? That is a big IF as you stated. Who knows if he will be the same again? T. Crawford? Tank Lawrence?

I'm going Gregory cuz he has the most upside.

There is no one person to build the defense around at this point in time, all are expendable. I am not so sure how much better Jones can get and hopefully, Gregory or Smith emerge as the clear leader. Crawford......maybe, maybe not.

Heads up guys. I inadvertently merged the offense and defense version of these threads together when I misread the titles. I've separated them again, but at some costs to a few of the good posts in this thread. My apologies to anybody who was confused or affected by this. Please let's keep on trucking here as if I'm not a big dumb dummy.

This has been going on for 10 years or more.
Yes we had a few players here and there, but they can't do it alone. And those few players weren't that huge of an impact. Ware early on, but certainly not in his last few years here.
So safe to say in the last 5 years...we always said someone will emerge, but they haven't.
We will wait and see and hope again this year.

Now I don't mean that to sound doom and gloom on the defense. There are bright spots. They do have more talent than the 2014 defense, and even last years D was not worse stat wise than the 2104 D. But the 2016 offense will need to be as good, if not better than the 2014 O to help the D until they get the suspended guys back and can start to gel. To see if a few payers will finally emerge.

As we will need a D to help win games at times, for those times when the O struggles. As the will at times. Especially when it gets to the playoffs, if we get there.

I guess this speaks to the void of reliable talent on defense, but I would say Jones by default.

This should not be as hard a question as appears and not in a good way.
