Several things I'd like to see us do in the next couple of months

couple of months . . . .

1. If another younger alternative at back-up QB is available, I'd want to take a look. I have to think that this is B Johnson's final year, and I want to hedge against Bartel.

2. At WR, I would still bring in a veteran after the cuts, or if possible, via a trade. Even the Cowboys' aren't supremely confident of Glenn returning - more like 50-50. Stanback is still learning the position, Austin is a question mark. That basically leaves Crayton and Hurd behind TO.

I'm not saying we're going to land R Williams or Boldin, but I think we've got to be on the lookout for a veteran wideout even if it's just for insurance purposes. I hope Stanback explodes on the scene or Austin really steps up, but I'd still keep on the lookout either via a trade or via the cuts.

3. I hope of the players that are due for an extention, we manage to re-sign Hamlin, Canty, and TO. As much as I like Colombo's game, I doubt we re-sign him given that we'll probably be ready to roll out either McQ, Martin, or Free in his spot.

But if we extend TO, our top 2 WRs will be with us for quite some time, our QB is signed for the long-term, as well as our top 3 RBs (assuming F Jones and T Choice sign, of course). Plus, our entire OL will be intact, except for Colombo. Finally, our top TE is already locked up.

And on Special Teams, both our Kicker and Punter will be around for several years.

(Not too shabby, JJ!)

I really like Colombo. He seems more smash mouth than the rest even though they are hardly gentle beings. His running game is at least very good and we don't hear a lot from the Strahan's of the world. He's consistent. Not sure how he grades though. Perhaps my feelings are incorrect. But I agree we may not be able to resign him. He may be in for a pretty good payday and we may not be able to afford it.

:starspin You have some good points, and for me, WR, is still my area of biggest concern. Glenn's knee is iffy... at best. Stanback is still "trying" to learn the position, Austin and Hurd haven't shown me either one is ready to step up as we need them to. Yes, Crayton has started for us, but I would still prefer to see us bring another vet WR just for insurance purposes if nothing else. WR is not my only area of concern, but for the moment, it's the one I'm most concerned about.

I think Koren Robinson will be in camp before it's all said and done.

I agree 100%. I do not want to ever see Johnson on the field.

Jerry will go after a future #1 WR or he will wait until next season to add a big name whether Glenn is here or not. I am still hoping Boldin winds up here. There are no guys getting cut that can even make this team IMO.

I think Canty will have 'show and prove' this season for his deal. Hamlin should get something done which is cap friendly, but long term. T.O. will get his money sometime during next season. I think Colombo is a goner because he's a RT and he's not a road grader in the run game. Martin will wind up at Guard with Houck back in town and may battle Koiser for the Left Guard job this season. McQuistan or Free should be the main competitors for Colombo's job next summer.

And on Special Teams, both our Kicker and Punter will be around for several years.

JJ really has built a very solid, young in most areas, competitive team that should be in the hunt for years to come.

I agree 100%. I do not want to ever see Johnson on the field. I am afraid that Johnson?s arm is gone, and he would be a dead turkey behind our offensive line. Bartel might have something, but we do need a young backup. Got to remember Tony Romo is 28 now, 5-6 years at best, and remember it took Romo 4 years to come on.

Jerry Jones traded for extra draft picks this year, with the addition of an extra 3rd and 4th this year. Those will be mainly used to draft an impact WR. From what I could see in 2009 mock drafts, if the juniors come out next year, there could be as many as 5-6 WRS in next years first round. That is where we will get a young Michael Irvin or Terry Glenn, a young impact WR.
3. I hope of the players that are due for an extention, we manage to re-sign Hamlin, Canty, and TO. As much as I like Colombo's game, I doubt we re-sign him given that we'll probably be ready to roll out either McQ, Martin, or Free in his spot.

Canty, Hamlin and T O should get new deals to stay with the team. Another player that I think the Cowboys should sign is Tank Johnson, remember now, he just signed a 2 year contract. Colombo might make it with Houck offensive style of coaching, wanting big nasty offensive linemen. I think Doug Free is our future LOT, and from what I have heard, James Marten will be pushing Kosier at LOG. Marten reminds me of a young big flozell Adams, and remember now, Flozell played offensive guard a couple of years and was pretty good at it. McQuistan, might not be big and thick with a big bubble butt like Houck likes, either McQuistan comes on this year, or you might see him traded, even to Miami. Remember it was Bill Parcells that found him in the draft with Jeff Irelands help. That leaves an opening at backup OG and OT, so, I see the Cowboys drafting again in 2nd to 4th rounds for backup OT or OG. Pretty soon I see the Cowboys looking at center too, remember Gurode is 30 this year.
And on Special Teams, both our Kicker and Punter will be around for several years.

Real good post!

Yes, I think our punter and kicker will be around for at least 8 years or so. And so will our long snapper. With the addition of Pacman, Felix Jones, Mike Jenkins, and Choice, we now have good punt and kickoff return guys too. However, our big weakness is at the gunner spots, remember we lost Keith Davis, one of our best special teamers, so we need some young guys to step up, or we might be in trouble at that spot. Finally, with Greg Ellis complaining and Ellis turning 33 this year, look for another, yeah I know another outside linebacker, but I don?t think Greg Ellis will be with the Cowboys after this year possibly. And unless Roy Williams really steps up this year, we will need a strong safety, but what I see happening is possibly moving Hamlin to strong safety next year, and letting Courtney Brown take over at FS
.

McQ and Free and Marten are all about the same size; though marten is tallest and lightest. None of them really are bubble butts like Houck had in the 90s. These guys are all a little more athletic then most of the 90s guys.
From all accounts McQ is the nastiest of them; Free might be the quickest.
So realistically it probably will go in the end with Free to LT and McQ to RT.
That is unless someone offers a good deal for one of them. The LT position is going to be occupied for at least the next 3 years. Colombo could actually benefit the most from Houck since its his run blocking that is weakest.

so does everybody else! But I get your point. I'd like to see a younger, change of pace kind of guy--someone who can run and improve, not looking for a long-term backup.

Columbo was told he'd get a raise if he performed well in 2007.

He didn't get a raise.

He's gone after this year.
