Seymour’s status remains unclear

08:09 AM EDT on Thursday, September 6, 2007

All-Pro defensive lineman Richard Seymour may miss more than the first six weeks of the season — significantly more.

There are unconfirmed reports, first mentioned on profootballtalk.com and getting stronger, that Seymour’s recovery from offseason knee surgery has been hampered because something went wrong during the arthroscopic procedure, and that he could miss the entire season. On Saturday, Seymour was placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list, which sidelines him for at least the first six weeks of the season. At any time between weeks six and nine, the Patriots can open a 21-day window for Seymour to get him on the practice field. At the end of the three weeks, they must activate Seymour to the 53-man roster or place him on season-ending injured reserve.

Seymour was in the weight room on Monday with a protective sleeve on his left knee.

It is worth noting that Patriots players recently selected their team captains, to be announced today. Seymour, a captain in each of the previous four seasons, is believed not to be among them. Instead, Ty Warren represents the defensive line.

I love Seymour, but he needs to retire while he can still walk. It's something new each year.
