From the scouts discuss pass rushers thread:

Shane Ray, Missouri
Measurables: 6-3, 245, NA
Stats: 14 1/2 sacks last year
Scouts Say: "He has to be a 3-4 linebacker and maybe just a pass-rush specialist. Not that that's a bad thing. He has crazy production as a pass rusher, but he's bad against the run.'' ..."Tough, fast, gets to the quarterback, he's pretty good. He never stops.''..."I think he's really overrated. No way he'll be an outside linebacker and he can't be a d-end. He's smart and he works hard, but he won in college with effort and a great first step. He'll get figured out at this level.'' ..."If he was a little bigger, I'd say he's the best. But his size and strength have me wondering about him. I wouldn't take him as high as he's probably going to go.''

If he really does fall and the doctors feel it's a correctable injury you take him at 27 without even thinking twice. His burst off the line gives him a chance to be a special player at a premium position. You don't pass on that late in the 1st.

If Gregory, Ray, Peters and DGB are all available at 27, what do you guys do? Who's red flag is the least offensive? Gamble and try to trade down and try to pick one of them up in the 2nd? Or pass on them all together.

I'd take Peters. Ray a close second. The other two scare me too much...

Cincy and SF are said to be looking hard at DGB. The two pass rushers seem to be dropping like stones. I think they would take Peters.

If Ray makes it to 27 you'd have to pull the trigger. Too talented of a pass rusher and by getting him in round 1 you get that 5th yr option

If Ray makes it to 27, I would hope that there is a nice trade down offer on the table for us.

Roll the dice on Ray, though I wouldn't want to take him at #27.
Peters next. His insubordination, disrespect for authority and clashes with coaches bother me. But you can write into his contract behavior incentives or have him attend anger management classes. And there's probably the off chance he simply didn't get along with those coaches, and he could like the Cowboys coaches.

Gregory would be last, and I wouldn't draft him before the third round - definitely not rounds 1 and 2. He's an addict. And it's a situation where he can't be trusted. If he isn't smart enough not to smoke until after the draft (which will cost him thousands if not a few million dollars), then he's likely not going to stop when he gets all that money.

Zierlein had a lot of hot takes this morning on the radio. I'll sum it up...

- Shane Ray likely needs surgery for his turf toe, which is a 5-month recovery. At minimum lands him on PUP, at maximum IR.
- Randy Gregory's "knucklehead" personality has teams scared. Likely will fall.
- One executive said it's more likely that both Ray & Gregory fall out of the 1st then both of them being taken in the 1st.
- Kevin Johnson will go top 20.
- Todd Gurley will go top 12.
- Marcus Peters is a R1 lock. Teams generally seem comfortable with his character & surprisingly aren't knocking him much for it.

Lot of interesting points here. Can't say I'm overly shocked by anything, but interesting nonetheless.

That Gurley/Johnson news breaks my heart, a trade down is sounding better by the second.

Damn, my fingers are gonna start cramping if I keep them crossed for Peters much longer and this article isn't making me feel any better...

If he would be out five months, you are basically entering another Demarcus Lawrence situation where his rookie season would be a wash. I would not take a player in the first that would miss all of camp and most of the preseason.

I would.

I would be hesitant on Shane ray even before the injury,he looks like smaller Jarvis jones with maybe a quicker 1st step but not a great his major red flag is a 7.7 three cone which is SHOCKINGLY bad especially for a pass rusher, his bust potential is through the roof.

You should know better.

So you're the GM and here's the conversation....

-

Scouting Department: This guy is a blue chip edge rusher we can build around for the next 10 years. The clear cut best player available.

You: I'm not taking a player who isn't ready right now.

-

Flush the "right now" mindset. You can not draft pure with that kind of thinking.

Not that I think Ray is elite. I actually have been much more critical of him than most of these draftniks. I think he's solid but I never had him in my top 15. At 27, different story.

What's it going to be then, eh?

If you read posts following what you quoted, you will see the explanation.

I don't find Ray to be the elite talent he is being sold as. He's not among the top guys like Beasley, Fowler etc.

His biggest thing is his ability to fire off at the LOS and if he has a bad turf toe, that pretty much negates that as well.

So if I think the player is a mid first rounder at best and he is injured, I am not wasting the time.

This is not like a Todd Gurley situation.

But that's not what you said. You said you wouldn't take a player who will miss camp and the preseason. That was a blanket statement. Meaning any player. That's what I responded to.

If you didn't mean that, just send me a like and we'll forget about it.
