The Cowboys might have caught a break with Shaneil Jenkins. I spoke with people at the Broncos, and they told me that he looked good in OTAs and minicamps. But when the pads came on, he wasn't the same player -- some days that happens. What is interesting is that this staff is playing him inside instead of out, but it appears that they have found the right spot. He was a powerful player on college tape and that has carried over to the pro side. His sack of Jared Goff was an explosive move and finish off a twist stunt to drive the Rams out of field goal range before the half.

We played last night without the starters.

Randy Gregory is in rehab, his back-up, Benson Mayowa is still on PUP rehabbing from off-season knee surgery, and DeMarcus Lawrence sat out for precautionary reasons as he eases into things following off-season back surgery.

UT Tyrone Crawford sat out, too (shoulder sx).

NT Cedric Thornton was the only starter who actually played last night.

I've no idea if we will ever see Gregory again or if that ship was sailed into the night, but the others should all start seeing snaps this Friday barring any setbacks.

Agree, we played without starters and they held up well in the first half. As we got more scrubs on the field everything disintegrated. Tapper didn't get on the field last night so we also have to see what he can offer.

We do need to hope and pray that Mayowa can bring some juice, because otherwise we are going to really struggle to mount a pass rush until Lawrence gets back. With Crawford and Thornton being able to bring some heat up the middle, we are going to have DE's get a chance against one on one blocking. We need someone to be able to finish. It's not going to be Russell. Irving was ok, but I don't see him being a great pass rusher. He has more chances of being disruptive from the inside in my opinion.

Jenkins is interesting....he might be our best hope for a designated pass rusher.

You guys are nuts if you think a DT can flash like that and not get picked up before making a practice squad.

Yep. We have a better chance putting Andy Jones, Darius Jackson, Chaz Green and Ryan Russell on the PS.

Looked like 3tech to me when the post of his signing hit the zone..........Marinelli isn't stuck on prior spots for a DLineman. Puts him in a spot that fit his abilities

Love to see some tape of him up against Martin, Collins, Fred and or the 1s in the next preseason game to see if his game carries thru....but he is a kid yet also, give him time.....and Collins is supposed to be bigger and quicker yet---cant wait for him to get back

Did Tapper play at all last nite?.....

Fellow rookie DT Maliek Collins is also closer to coming off PUP.

The team definitely needs to be right about Benson Mayowa.

There's a huge hole at RDE and he's being counted on to fill it.

DeMarcus Lawrence is looking like a boss in practice and he can move over there post suspension, if needed, but I'd like to keep him primarily on the left side.

With Crawford and Thornton being able to bring some heat up the middle, we are going to have DE's get a chance against one on one blocking. We need someone to be able to finish. It's not going to be Russell.

Hopefully, Ryan Russell will be able to bring some juice playing limited snaps strictly as a reserve.

Irving was ok, but I don't see him being a great pass rusher. He has more chances of being disruptive from the inside in my opinion.

I want to see him play more.

David Irving can give blockers fits with his length and quickness.

DMN DL snippets

Three months ago the Cowboys probably thought they'd have a deep rotation at defensive end for their preseason opener. DeMarcus Lawrence, Randy Gregory, Benson Mayowa and Charles Tapper might have been the group they envisioned.

Instead, the Cowboys went the entire way with David Irving, Ryan Russell, Shaneil Jenkins and Mike McAdoo as their ends.

"My initial reaction is positive," Russell said of the group's play. "There were a lot of hits, a lot of things happening. We didn't win, so obviously that's something we got to do."

"He's definitely a hard-working guy," Russell said of Jenkins. "He knows the plays, he knows all the positions. Very strong guy.

Irving didn't seem overly impressed with his own performance. "I played all right, but not good enough," he said. "I know I need to be more consistent. We have to pick it up. ... I'm feeling comfortable, I just feel like I need to do more."

Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli said Irving and Russell "showed up at times" but he declined to go into much detail before he watched the game film.

Marinelli said he thought McAdoo "really had some snap to him" and was "fun to watch."

"It was just down to numbers, so those guys had to play a lot, which is good," Marinelli said. "You're young, you want to play. We got some good tape to watch on them, try to get better for next week."

McAdoo was invisible as far as I saw in the live watch. Will probably rewatch tonight and pay more attention to the DL and OL.

I believe he took out the 2 lineman on the Jenkins sack as part of the stunt.

IMO the best scenario is Mayowa playing well at RDE and DLaw staying on the left side - but if Mayowa doesn't stand out our best twosome may be DLaw moving to RDE and Irving playing LDE.
