The new 'America's Team'

Adam_Schefter_SH.jpg
By Adam Schefter | NFL Network

Here’s a guarantee way more accurate than Pittsburgh safety Anthony Smith’s that the Steelers would beat the Patriots.

For the remainder of this season, the title of "America’s Team" is officially on loan, from Dallas to New England.

Until New England loses a game -- if it loses a game -- the Patriots are "America’s Team."

Anyone who follows football now follows the Patriots the way it would a hometown team, waiting to see whether New England can get past the best teams of this year and the 1972 Miami Dolphins of yesteryear.

There are those who root for the Patriots, those who root against them, but no one can deny that everyone is watching them. Everyone.

From here on, they tune in to see when Tom Brady throws five more touchdown passes to pass Peyton Manning and make him the NFL’s all-time single season touchdown passing king.

They track whether Randy Moss can reel in four more touchdown receptions and the NFL’s all-time single-season touchdown catch record that now belongs to Jerry Rice.

They monitor New England's assault of history and the pursuit of perfection. The Patriots next two games are football’s version of slam dunks.

Sunday comes a Jets team that exposed Spygate and made the Patriots pay. Now comes New England's payback. In the past, cameramen captured Bill Belichick and Eric Mangini's postgame midfield handshake. This year, the cameramen can take the day off. If there is any handshake, it will be a bigger upset than the Jets beating the Patriots.

After the Jets comes a Dolphins team as imperfect as New England is perfect. So put it down now -- 15-0, leaving a Saturday night game in Giants Stadium, on NFL Network, as the lone remaining obstacle between 16-0 and history.

No longer is it a question of whether the Patriots will go 16-0. The more pertinent question is whether they will go 19-0. And maybe their biggest obstacle is the team from which they have borrowed a title.

If and when the Patriots and Cowboys square off in Glendale, Ariz. -- in what would be the best winning percentage two Super Bowl teams have ever combined to have -- they would be playing for a title way more meaningful than "America's Team."

Shefter is a rabid Cowboy-hater. Really, he is. He has great sources and is a very good reporter, but when he cites his opinion, it's always with an anti-Cowboy bias.

My favorite moment this year was when he picked the Eagles to upset the Cowboys in the November game. Jamie Dukes was sitting next to him and after he made the pick, gave him this incredulous look - and Shefter shot back with, "Just watch! You'll see!".

We all know how that one turned out. I wonder if he'll pick the Eagles again this week. :)

Screw it so what will it mean if they go 16-0 and then lose in the Super Bowl? What will they be called then?

Umm...I don't recall anyone calling the Colts America's team on their pursuit of perfection until they lost.

number of miles mapquest says I live from Irving, TX = 1,110.36.

number of miles mapquest says I live from FedEx Field = 242.06

number of regular season Cowboys games I'll be able to watch on TV at home this year = 16

counting nfl network, and considering I do NOT have the Sunday Ticket...

doubt that leaves we are America's Team = 0

Schefter was a Denver beat writer about 3 seconds before the NFL Network launched. Everyone in the league hates the monicker "Americas Team".

This is a NFL zone thread. That said, fans are watching the Patriots Nationally big.

Pats have 3 pelts and Indi had zero that year. And Pats are breaking most all offensive scoring records. Many can hate and attack, but they are King of the Mountain till someone can knock them off.

13-0 is 13-0

12-1 is 12-1 :) beWare that!

This is an unscientific test using google.

This shows me that more people hate the patriots on the web.

I have a confession....the Dallas Cowboys are really my second favorite team....and have been for about 2 decades now. My favorite team is the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.

Psst...the Patriots have a star on their helmet too.

I thought the Patriots uniform change around 1990 was one of the best decisions that franchise has made. Old unis were a joke.

I did have a problem with the star. Only one team may have the star!
