Actually, Schramm didn't induct Jordan due to a contract holdout that he had going into his last season (1976). Jordan wanted to be paid 100k for his final season, and held out to get it. Schramm held a grudge, as he was wont to do over money matters (see how he used player annuities to get Tony Dorsett, Randy White, Ed Jones and John Dutton to cross the picket line during the 1987 strike). Jones righted this wrong in his first season as owner.

100K?
No wonder there are so many bitter old NFL guys around today!

I gave up a very long time ago on the HOF. Having said that, there is no question that he is deserving. Does that mean he'll ever get in? Probably not.

I'll admit it used to frustrate the hell out of me. Once I understood what the problem was it all made sense. Now I'm just kind of meh with the whole thing.

I'm creating a poll here and also here http://polldaddy.com/poll/8161429/

Chuck was a phenomenal athlete and the only athlete ever at WV to letter in 5 sports. He was drafted by the Bears after playing OL at WV. He was released after two years because of a knee injury he was told was career ending.

Landry had the genius to trade for the guy. How the heck he thought he was worth a 2nd rounder I'll never know but danged if it wasn't a steal.

He played the Sam for two years then moved to the Will when Dave Edwards (who doesn't get enough credit either) was put at the Sam. Howley's career took off. He was a tremendous athlete with true 4.5-4.6 speed who was a great coverage linebacker. He had 5 INTs one year (and I think perhaps another). Jordan, Edwards and Howley were perhaps the greatest trio of 4-3 LBers ever (with no apologies to the Steelers of that time). He intercepted two passes in SB V and another in SB VI. He was SB MVP of V and maybe should have won it in VI.

It's a shame he and Jordan don't get the credit they deserve. IMO, Howley was one of the greatest players to ever wear the star.

Hey, he is the only player on a losing team to be named MVP. A great player who should be in HOF, a big reason for 1st Super Bowl win vs Miami. And for the record I was alive at that time and watched that game.

The people presenting the trophy refused to give it to Duane Thomas who won the voting. There was chaos and they finally made a 'safe' pick in Roger.

Roger was good in that game but the running game and defense won that game. Howley intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble in that game. His INT return for 41 yds in the 4th qtr led to a score and helped ice the game. Each team only had about 100 yards passing. Roger was 12/19 and had two TDs. Miami converted 3 third down conversions and only had 80 net rushing yds (one sack was for -29yds). We had 252 rushing yards. Garrison had 74 and Thomas 95 yds. I believe that is the only SB with the defense throwing a TD shutout.

BTW, Dallas had 11 future HOFers on that team. Hopefully that list grows by at least one before I go under.

The Cowboys under Schramm were renowned for having the lowest salaries in the league.

That reminds me of an interview I saw with Duane Thomas who said he was only making $25,000 a year. He said he and several players were having to get jobs during the offseason to make ends meet.

And Tex was the main person that turned Thomas against the Cowboys. Tex lied to him; to be fair Tex lied to others as well including a couple in the HOF. So it wasn't personal I suppose. OTOH, Duane was rather....difficult....to deal with.

I remember in the interview Thomas said Tex lied to him and he still sounded bitter.

I'm curious what makes you say that? Do you believe there is a bias? I do personally, it makes no sense that Howley, Harris and Pearson aren't in the HOF. I was listening to NFL radio yesterday and they were talking about Steve McNair getting into the HOF and one of the guys was a voter

Yes, there is a bias and a Dallas voter has commented on it multiple times. He's very frustrated and says they won't get in until some older guys who vote are gone. FWIW.

except for the super stars of that era having offseason jobs was the NORM. It did not really start to change until the late 70's for the majority of players; and not until the 90's for everyone.

there was a pretty famous sportswriter that quit the HOF committee over some of what he had seen. Wish I remembered who it was.
