Should expectations be higher?

Judging from the comments here I think expectations are too low. The offense will be better - replacements on the OL will live up to the recent standard and I think this young defense will surprise a lot of people. There will be growing pains on D but I have a feeling everything will really start gelling together by late November, early December. Just at the right time.

11-5 and an NFC championship appearance, maybe more.

As long as we're mulling expectations here, I think a 10-6 season would find me being reasonably satisfied, all things considered. The defense will surely be challenged to control the passing games of opponents throughout the early going in 2017. If the offense is able to make up for the defensive gaffs that are always predictable among teams making defensive changes, we should fare acceptably well. The unknowns on defense are sure to make this season one that is sure to have many of us sitting on the edge of our seats early-on and possibly grinning widely later.

With a tough level of competition this year, I'll be keeping my expectations at arm's length in fervent hopes of actually enjoying the stiff competition that will possibly be coming our way. I'm counting on Dak to improve his game readiness, assuming that's even possible, in view of his outstanding rookie success last year. I'm looking forward to seeing Switzer justify the sky high expectations that have been so prevalent during our OTAs and minicamp. Let's also hope that Dez stays healthy and able to showcase his better qualities. Maybe Rico Gathers will surprise us all as well.

Have to admit, not as excited as last year round this time.

All this off field crap is bumming me out.

If this team can somehow get through camp and 5 preseason games, without any major injuries that would cheer me up.

What are the odds of that?

The expectation is multiple Super Bowls over the next 5 to 7 seasons.

Anyone who lowballs it are like someone who gives up on finding that special person in their lives because they think they have had their heart broken too often.

You can't find love without risking your heart. True, if you stop trying you will never get hurt, but that isn't living, it's merely existing.

When you lower expectations you also lower the standard. If you expect 8-8 then you celebrate 10-6 as an achievement.

There is only one standard for the Cowboys, always has been. It's why they call it a legacy.

I can't get too high. Been disappointed too many times over the years. We should be a very good team but I've thought that about other teams that flopped. Just have to wait and see. I expect at least 10 wins. anything less would be a disappointment. And I expect more than one and done in the playoffs. But again I wouldn't be surprised if that didn't happen.

It seems as though the team has let us down for so long, the general concensus here is very guarded optimism. We have just come off of a 13-3 record, we have a QB that seems to make good decisions with the football, we have added talent on the defensive side of the football and we have two or three more guys from our potentially historically great draft class last year that should come into their own this year, namely Smith, Tapper and Gathers.

If this was 1996-2000ish, and we had this same group, we would be EXPECTING a super bowl win based on recent history. So I ask, are we being too guarded in our optimism? Are we expecting too little from this team as fans? Or we relegated to a never ending cycle of "just wait until next year"

This team reminds me of the 1992 team. Everyone thought they were a year away and they won the super bowl. I really think this team is man for man a better team than the 1992 squad. Why not this year?

As long as I have been a Cowboys fan I never expect SB only the chance to compete for a SB. Making it to the NFC Championship game with the chance of getting to the show.
As for this team yes I have high expectation which is to be a legitimate challenger for the SB. I just never have gone into a season as a fan of claiming SB or bust.

Expectations seem about right to me.

Very mixed, but with floor moved up.
Now it seems low side predictions are 9-7 or so and high side are a Super Bowl.

Like it has been for years now, it'll depend on the defense.
Other than in 2015, the offense has been good enough for a decade now.
There was good enough D maybe 1-2 of those years.
Then you have to have it come together as well....including a sprinkling of good fortune.

The D is getting there. Not sure its there yet, but sure would be sweet:flagwave:

I appreciate your optimism and enthusiasm. But to compare them to the 1992 cowboys is a little much

Let's look at the defense
  • At safety : Thomas Everett/ James Washington / Darren Woodson > Jeff Heath/ Byron jones/ Blanton This isn't even close
  • At corner Kevin Smith/ Larry Brown/ Clayton Holmes/ Issiac Holt > Scandrick, brown, and Carroll
  • At linebacker Ken Norton/ Dixon Edwards/Vinson Smith/Robert Jones/and Godfrey Miles > Lee/ Hitchens, Wilber, smith, nacho. This is a huge difference. That depth on the 1992 cowboys was tremendous
  • At defensive line Haley, Lett, Maryland, Tolbert, Casillas, Hennings, Jeffcoat, Jimmie jones > all the cowboys linemen + Giants linemen x2
You could make to starting Dline's with that group. It was ruthless.

There's no way this Dline compares to that group. You have do many probowlers, all pros on that line

I understand your thought process, but that is the view from hindsight. When the season started that year NO ONE, probably including the Cowboys organization knew they would win the super bowl that year. The consensus was that we were one year away from having a chance, and we got hot at the right time and won it all that year.

There turned out to be some great players like Emmitt Smith, Troy Aikman, and Michael Irvin, etc on that team. To be sure there were some good defenders on that team.

No one knows if someone like Collins, on defense, will turn out to be Warren Sapp II at DT. These DBs seem to have the pedigree. Sean Lee is as good as any in that bunch.

Jaylon Smith could end up being better than anyone on that 92 linebacking corps. He has the pedigree. He has the ability.

We don't have the benefit of hindsight for this team. We just don't know yet. We could repeat what we have done historically (recently) which is crater to a losing record after a good year.

The 92 team's expectations were not as high at the beginning of the season as the expectations should be for this version of the Cowboys. I don't know what this group will do, but if Dak improves on his performance from last year, look out. This team will be very hard to beat, regardless if we start out below average on defense.

This is a team that if they can stay in contention early with all the new faces they will be a tough out at the end of the season as the team gels.

I'll see your optimism and raise you

#2. Garrett

Expectations are too high with these 2 clowns in charge

  • I don't expect a better record than 13-3
  • I do expect us to win the NFC east in a close fight
  • I would hope that we win a playoff game
  • I cannot see us winning the Super Bowl but would be elated beyond belief

I'm not sure a team can expect to win a super bowl in a given year. The best that a team (any team, including the Patriots) can reasonably hope for is that barring being wiped out due to injuries that they should be in the discussion as a team reasonably capable of winning it all at the end of the season. We should be one of those teams THIS year.

Absolutely. I don't celebrate moral victories, or the regular season record. 2 playoff wins in 21 years is pathetic. Too many people here go out of their way to defend Garrett and/or celebrate the Dumbest ****. The fact there are threads about jersey sales is sad.

It's a league set up for parity. Everyone's expectations should always be tempered.

We're likely a 12 win football team, but realistically 11-5. The refs will screw us in at least one game early enough to make the advantage given to an opponent insurmountable.
