Should expectations be higher?

It seems as though the team has let us down for so long, the general concensus here is very guarded optimism. We have just come off of a 13-3 record, we have a QB that seems to make good decisions with the football, we have added talent on the defensive side of the football and we have two or three more guys from our potentially historically great draft class last year that should come into their own this year, namely Smith, Tapper and Gathers.

We're replacing several veterans in the secondary, whose experience is being undervalued at the moment. We're replacing them with a bunch of rookies. I sense a bit of "anyone will be better than those guys", which may be true in time but it's asking a lot of rookies. Zeke is probably going to miss games due to suspension, the schedule looks tougher, and Dak isn't going to sneak up on anyone this year. If anything, expectations seem too high here.

I'm thinking 10 wins is the ceiling for the season, but (if it's enough to get in) I could see this team going further in the playoffs. Dak isn't a rookie, the rookie DBs will have 16 games experience, so the end result could be better. Could be, but I expect a few more bumps in the road during the regular campaign.

I see a 9-7 or 8-8 team this year. Just too many holes on defense, a tougher schedule, and a still young QB.

I hope to be wrong.

I also agree with this. also I said earlier in the week that the cowboys have not had two winning seasons in a row with garrett as head coach. the 8-8 seasons with garrett were not losing seasons but of course could have went either way. the last four times in last ten years that this team had double digit wins the next season the team failed to win atleast nine. I might be wrong on that. so I am not expecting much this season. I will still keep rooting for them reguardless.

The expectation is multiple Super Bowls over the next 5 to 7 seasons.

Anyone who lowballs it are like someone who gives up on finding that special person in their lives because they think they have had their heart broken too often.

You can't find love without risking your heart. True, if you stop trying you will never get hurt, but that isn't living, it's merely existing.

When you lower expectations you also lower the standard. If you expect 8-8 then you celebrate 10-6 as an achievement.

There is only one standard for the Cowboys, always has been. It's why they call it a legacy.

 I don't know why you had to drag up the past and interject "Sgt.Peppers lonely hearts club band members" into your insightful and brilliant as usual posts,,,what? Are you trying to make me cry in my rock / island existence?

Sucked in? I'm fully expecting a down season. All signs point to it. The offseason was a school bus fire.

8--9 wins max.

and so was last year...and two years before that. your consistent negativity is priceless. you've never predicted a winning season although i see you are hedging with 9 in 2017.

If this was 1996-2000ish, and we had this same group, we would be EXPECTING a super bowl win based on recent history. So I ask, are we being too guarded in our optimism? Are we expecting too little from this team as fans? Or we relegated to a never ending cycle of "just wait until next year"

This team reminds me of the 1992 team. Everyone thought they were a year away and they won the super bowl. I really think this team is man for man a better team than the 1992 squad. Why not this year?

This defense is NOWHERE near as good as that 92 team.

Whatever the record ends up being, there are going to be 5-6 games that come down to a single play and 3-4 or fewer points. You just can't predict how a season will turn out anymore with the amount of parity in the league.

We do have one of the better rosters in the NFC, though. I fully expect us to be in contention all season, and if we're not, something is wrong.
