Should OT Rules be Changed?

I think they should be modified. I do like the sudden death aspect of it though. The Modification I would make would be to remove Field Goals from Over Time play. I hate it when a team drives about 30 yards, and sets up a field goal. Make teams earn the win with a TD in overtime. Personally I hate FG in the game of football, that is played by men. Its brutal for men to beat each other silly for an hour and have the game come down to a guy weighing buck 50. What do u guys think?

If we woulda beat Denver the same way they beat us yesterday in OT then none of us would be bringing this up.

So I say no. Leave OT the way it is.

No, it evens out. We beat NY in OT without them getting the ball. So yesterdays loss really is not the movtivation. It did bring the thoughts back in my head though. I just really hate to see any team lose by a field goal, especially in overtime. And to be honest, It wouldn't hurt my feelings if they removed fg from football all together, or least not allow them from inside 40 yards.. make teams earn what they get.

The NBA doesn't do a 3 point contest, slam dunk contest or a game of HORSE in their overtime. They just add a couple minutes to the clock and play a mini-5th period.

I don't think anyone's ever complained about the NBA's overtime. People have complained about FIFA's shootout, NHL's new shootout rules and NCAA/NFL's overtime rules.

I'd be cool with a fifth period with 5 minutes on the clock, one TO each.

Game ends when the clock strikes 00:00.

I thought about that too,, i would go with 10 min though. 5min is to easy to eat up with a good running game and still kick mid range fg for the win. the perfect OT would be, 10 min extra period and NO FG allowed.. i really hate Field goals lol

Thats worse

Its easy to say after an OT loss that lasted 3 plays. But I always thought they can give the opposing team one possesion to match. If they match then its sudden death

Or if the team that started with the ball didnt score, then its sudden death.

It will never change, but if I were GM Id think of something like that

Our proposals are actually quite similar.

The main difference with yours is that giving a team a chance to match takes the clock management element out of the game.

the NCAA system would make for much better entertainment, and quite frankly, I would be open to the idea, but as Mickey said, the NFL makes billions of dollars off their TV contracts, and TV doesn't want games to be played for more than 3 hours, they have other shows that they want to air, and money to be had from them

no, when the "5th period" is over then you enter a sudden death situation, and play until someone wins.....you dont play sports for a tie, its win or lose......

The game has been played for 60 minutes, grinding it out, or shooting it out.

Its now do or die.

You cant count on a coin flip. The odds of winning it are 50/50.

You have to depend on the team to step up and play D, or step up and drive the field.

The NCAA OT rules are terrible.

I love the OT rules and the only thing I would want changed (I may be wrong) is that a replay challenge should be given to each team.

Well, to clarify...

The game ends when the clock strikes 00:00, assuming that the score is no longer tied.

This approach is different from the status quo, where the first score wins.

In my approach, the other team would get a chance to tie/win, but with whatever time is left on the clock.

If the score is still tied after time runs out, a 6th period is played...like the NBA.

The physical nature of the game would ensure the potential for many more injuries (IMO), if the games had multiple overtimes.

I dont ever see it happening.

it won't happen because TVs don't want NFL games running that long, and the NFL doesn't want to mess with a billion dollar profit

I can watch a game for 4 hours rather than see it maybe end bc a kicker kicks the KO out of bounds, thus leaaving the D only 25 yards to spare.

It will never change, and the OT rules werent the cause for our loss, but Im just saying, after the first possesion, if they dont score, its sudden death. If they do score, the other team has one possesion, if they match what the first team did, its then sudden death, or they can win it by getting more points than the 1st team. (TD over a FG, or 8 points over 7)

I understand your point, but it's funny how the NFL and the networks have done everything in their power to maximize commercial time.

1. Games are now scheduled for 3:15 minutes long, up 15 minutes from the early 90s. 1pm games used to end at 4pm, but now the second games are scheduled to start at 415pm...

...even though the actual game clock has remained 60 minutes.

Even listening to the old NFL Films soundtracks, John Facenda says, that the NFL is a "2 and 1/2 hour" carnage of sound and action.

2. The NFL used to stop the clock after any play that went out of bounds. Now, the clock only stops within 5 minutes of the end of each half (I think) after out of bounds plays. So, more gametime passes quickly, allowing for more commercial time.

Just things I've noticed over the years...

That can't be true about the out of bounds..

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty darn sure I'm right. Check it out on Sunday or any tapes of recent games. I may not be right about the 5 minute mark (it may be later or sooner), but check out the action in the 1st quarter.

I've also noticed that even when WRs (or whatever position) go out of bounds, sometimes the refs will call for the time to continue to run, ruling that the forward progress was stopped inbounds...

Make it like college. Give the other team a chance to win it, maybe sudden death in the 2nd overtime.

Personally, I HATE sudden death.

Yeah it'll work for you as much as against you...

but I can't stand losing when a team gets a chance to move the ball and you never get an opportunity to answer back.
The losses in OT are far more painful than the wins are pleasurable.

I'd like to see a stat on what the percentage is of the game being decided in one possesion by the team who won the cointoss. It's an obvious advantage.
A freakin coin toss.
Forget a Kicker who weighs a buck 50.
The game gets decided by a freakin coin toss!
Let's just skip OT and a flip a stupid coin at the end of regulation and proclaim the correct caller of the coin as the winner of the game.

I say...
1 extra 10 min quarter. Whoever scores the most... wins the game.
If it's still tied...
then I don't know...
use an OT stat like the team who acquired the most yards in OT or something.

But the NFL would probably say Paper, Rock, Scissors.
