What happened to Israel Mukuamu after the past year:

Yes, as of late 2025, Israel Mukuamu is a free agent after being released by the Carolina Panthers from their practice squad in November 2025, following earlier stints with the Cowboys where he signed a one-year deal in March 2025 before being cut in August 2025. He's now testing the free agency market again, looking for his next opportunity after being released by two teams within months.

His recent journey:

  • Early 2025: Signed a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys.
  • August 2025: Released by the Cowboys.
  • September 2025: Signed to the Carolina Panthers practice squad.
  • November 2025: Released by the Panthers, making him a free agent.

S/CB, Israel Mukuamu, 6'4", 215 lbs, 4.46 40 time. Mukuamu was a nice backup Safety and emergency Cornerback for the Dallas Cowboys the previous 4 seasons (Drafted in 2021). The Cowboys gave him a 1 year contract extension exactly a year ago in early 2025 for 1 year, $1 million and only $600k guaranteed after Israel Mukuamu has proven from 2021 - 2024 to be a very good backup S/CB, plus a big contributor on Special Teams.

I thought Mukuamu was better than the backups (and even some starters) the Cowboys decided to keep at Safety, and it showed throughout this season. It certainly would help if Mukuamu was back playing for the Cowboys since he currently is a free agent.

Should the Dallas Cowboys make an offer to bring Israel Mukuamu back as a solid backup at S/CB but a solid contributor on Special Teams?

I liked him. Then again, I don't have all of the information when it comes to the decision they made to cut him.

Izy was a Quinn style DB. He was tall and rangy with a wide arm spread. He looked as if he was trending upwards in regard to his skill set.

He seemed to have his best season in 2024. From 2022 to 2024, he participated in 46 of the 51 regular season games.

i was surprised when they cut him, particularly considering that the secondary was resembling a M.A.S.H. unit for the 2nd season in a row.

I don't know if they cut him because he was a poor fit for Eberflus's defense or if his motivation and commitment was declining or if it was just some personal issue. We never get the entire story.

I do know this, judging from the past two preseasons. The Cowboys need a lot of bodies for their secondary. They have a habit of going through them pretty quick.

They should take a look at Izy if there isn't some unrevealed issue, the more the better.

He was a weird release especially after seeing the crap we had at corny. Did not get that one.
Well to be fair, 3 defensive coordinators/staffs had their look at him and apparently didn't do enough to distinguish himself as a CB/S to get on the field. Where he dropped the ball IMO is not carving himself a role on STs given his size and speed. He should've been aiming for Goodwin's job as soon as he got drafted.

Well that’s another thing the Cowboys literally signed him in March to a contract….then cut him in August….i thought he was a good ST player they are just stuck on Goodwin.

Bring back? No

Any reason he should have been cut or not brought back last season? No

I liked him from the draft, but he really hasn't shown enough to be considered than Just Another Guy.
Feel like he's stuck in a weird position issue, where he's not quick enough for corner, but isn't a safety.

Maybe something minor happened that caused his release/no return.

Mukuamu became one of our best Special Teamers from 2023 - 2024. Very weird how the Cowboys could have gotten more from him being a dual player than they did from Goodwin who is way older and only decent at Special Teams nowadays due to his age. I would cut Goodwin and bring Mukuamu back. Too bad this batch of coaching assistants Schotty and Eberflus brought with them are as dumb as them. It showed all of this 2025 season.

Need to see what DC we’d get first, if it be someone like Harris whom drafted him and had him at corner then I could see it but that’s not looking like the case. If new dc wants him he’s available by all means, go get your guys!
Fat NO

I agree with you that Mukuamu was better than some of the Cowboys backups at both CB and S. I would bring him in if he is cheap and let him try to make the 53 man roster. Why not.
