Should the Cowboys rethink safety priority?

That ship has sailed. It would have been nice to have some NFL caliber safeties when their was NFL caliber talent on the defense, but that was then.

We should have, a long time ago. All the VFA acquisitions and most of the draft picks the next two seasons are going to go to defense. And we've shown we're more than willing to shuffle players to find fits we like. We stink on defense right now, but I'm not too worried about our ability to solve that problem long-term. It just stinks that we'll also need to do something about QB at that point unless we get lucky again somehow.

I wouldn't worry about safety until the front 7 is strong. Hopefully the Cowboys dip into the free agency pool a little this year and load up for a run.

Spending a 1st round pick on a safety for this team would be a wasted pick. We need to upgrade the front 7 first then address the back end.

It wouldn't be a waste if the safety was the best player on the board. Dallas needs talent everywhere on defense. The lack of pass rush isn't the only reason the secondary gets burned routinely. Dallas needs a true center fielder type safety that can cover sideline to sideline.

I understand what you are saying but I would rather have a dominant edge rusher than a center fielder type safety. I believe the game is won in the trenches and a Charles Haley or Harvey Martin threat is overall more valuable to a defensive unit and how effective they are.

I agree and disagree. The game is still won and lost in the trenches. But teams are passing the ball more, which leads to greater demand for guys who excel in coverage. The FS and DE position are both crucial in this defense. But I wouldn't say one is more important than the other. I wouldn't shy away from a stud FS in the first. I'd rather take that safety than reach for a DL solely bc it's a greater need. The order in which the front office retools this defense makes no matter to me bc I don't see the cowboys as real contenders to win a super bowl in the next couple years. Just add talent. Whether its DL, LB, or S.

I covet a dominating FS. To me it's about opportunity. I'd like to prioritize the DL but if there's a blue chip FS prospect staring you in the face at our pick you have to take him.
